Anyone else question what the meaning of life is after a vacation?

I just spent 4 days on Hilton Head Island with my wife and I’m at the airport for our return flight. I obviously cannot wait to get home and see my kid.

But I mean are we as human beings really meant to work 5-7 days a week with maybe one full day for leisure until we’re 65 years old? It just doesn’t seem like that’s what humanity should be.

But I know that’s just the way it is so I guess nothing can be done.

It could be worse. We could have been born during times when humans were having to spend all of our time just eking out survival.

I retired 1o years ago after 43 years of the old 8-5p. Glad I’m hanging on and enjoying this time in life. I hear you man!

It’s normal to feel that way.

But humanity for tens of thousands of years had little leisure outside of drinking corn liquor around a fire at night. We “should” be out hunting game and struggling to thrive in nature, but a long time ago, we figured out how to build civilization so that we can work 5 days a week and have some chill time. Without fear of death for that vacation.

To say we had fun at the beach this year doesn’t convey what I felt.

We did a lot of different activities, and really, it’s just that every day was full of interesting things.

I’m finding that life absolutely FLIES by when I do regular day in day out computer work but really slows down when I do interesting things.

I don’t want my life to fly by in the pursuit of money.

I bet their depression and anxiety rates were basically zero.

The only thing that makes a trip like that better is to take the time to clean your house spotless before you leave. When you get home nothing to do but relax and maybe throw some dirty clothes in the washer, at most.

Then sit and contemplate while you have a drink and look at what your work let you return to after the vacation that you earned is done.

Usually a 2-3 day funk, and then it's back in the groove. Coming back from the Smokey Mountains got me for like a month. That's my top retirement destination. God's country.

Not five seconds before reading this post I realized that this will be another ski season in which I will not be a ski bum. For years now I've been saying that I want...need to be a ski bum for a whole winter.

Why do I keep putting it off? Work...

This a troll post? I assume it is since you're trying to existentially discuss something but are complaining about working too much, despite having just spent paying for 4 days on HH. You stay in a tent on the beach roasting hot dogs for food? Didn't think so. You driving a 4 cylinder? Didn't think so. You got the cheapest cell phone/package available? Didn't think so.

I would take eking for survival rather than working my life away at least you have some cool experiences along the way.

I had this moment sitting on a beach in the Bahamas last year. I understand the whole working vs hunting for food like cavemen thing.

The real question is "are we, those of us in the developed world, doing it right?" Meaning working 40-60 hours a week in pursuit of a house, two cars, boat, golf membership, etc. Do we really need all that stuff?

I sat in the Exhumas drinking with a bunch of locals. These dudes all "work" but it's not all day five or six days a week and its not in pursuit of Stuff. Yes, they live in a crappy little hut and have three swimsuits, five t-shirts and a pair of flip flops to their name. But they are happy. Do I really need all my Stuff? Or would I be happier without it?

By the end of that trip, I was doing the math to figure out how long I could live on savings and the income from tending bar three or four nights a week. Live in a beach hut and hang out the rest of the time. Only big downside would be the possibility of a hurricane rolling in and killing me.

I did not until I hit my 30's. Did a "babymoon" a couple of weeks ago as a final getaway before becoming parents. Most of our 4 hour drive home revolved around us talking about LLC's, the rat race, and how we can thrive without the mundane corporate BS. We did make headway on starting the LLC though. We are still navigating how to bill insurance and if we even want to accept it, but the wheels are turning.

No. We are meant to live in perfect communion with God and each other in paradise but we are broken creatures in a fallen sinful world.

But to be fair Exodus 20:8-11

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.
11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

I think vacation today as opposed to previously, and when I say previously, I mean before the use of technology and this includes the cell phone — so many of us have been conditioned to not turn it off — always stay in contact — always being “on,” and —- feeling guilty when we don’t respond quickly enough.

This ruins the quality of one’s vacation. As I have gotten older, I am very intentional about putting the phone or any communication device down and being more present in the moment. It has done wonders for me.

Just returned from a week in Jackson, WY staring at the Grand Tetons. I’ve been sitting at my desk this week wondering WTH I’m doing in this job and all the life choices I made to get here.

I think I'm messed up.

When I travel, I always miss home. But I travel a lot for work, so now even leisure travel always feels like work as a consequence. I'm so tired of airports and hotels, but a perk of my job is a vast collection of airline miles and Marriott/Bonvoy points.

And since we had the second child, I honestly don't hate going to work on Monday. I love my family and my kids, but weekends are every bit of exhausting as weekdays for me. So my wife and I do get burnt out with life and feel like we need vacations to relax even though we clearly don't know how to handle leisure time.

I don't think I'm fully capable of relaxing at home though. Even if I legitimately have a couple of hours of quiet time (rare)......I get busy with something around the house or in the yard.

TL;DR: I use gummies periodically from the dispensery in Baton Rouge and they help a lot.
