We are planning a trip for my daughter’s senior trip to NYC the beginning of June. It will be 4 of us going staying for probably 5 nights. The main thing they want to do is see shows so we are planning on seeing a show every night. This is our first time to NYC so during the day we will hit some of the “must dos” 911 memorial, Central Park, shopping, the Met, Statue of Liberty, etc. What would be the best area for us to stay in? I was looking and thinking something close to Broadway since that is the bulk of our trip but I’m not sure. We were trying to keep the hotel budget around $2k but will go up a little if needed to get in a good location.

5 nights with 4 people in a single room, right?

Broadway... Jesus. Just remember that you have the subway, so nothing is really very far away. And for "shopping," you need only hit up my brethren on 47th street

I would think the Theater District makes sense. Shows, Times Square, the park, etc. You'll typically find better hotel deals downtown, but it'll be a slog up there to go to the shows nightly IMO. You'll have to battle it the other direction to go to 9/11, etc. but likely makes more sense.

I like the area just north of Broadway, closer to Central Park. Just away from the somewhat trashy-ness of Broadway area, but still easy walk to shows and to Central Park.

We’ve stayed at both the viceroy and the Warwick which are both in that area. Both were fine. It can be a little pricier, but the Dominic is the most affordable “luxury” hotel and has a spa. Slightly different area.

Getting a snack/drink at the baccarat bar is a fun for a New York opulence experience.

Ippudo is a japanese restaurant near Broadway we like.

If you want a “late night” out after a show, dinner at a Korean bbq place in Korea town is all age fun.

Eataly is a tourist trap and also awesome.

Walk the highline. La Boite is a spice store that is awesome - although Google says it may have closed. If not, this place will make you rethink grocery store spices and make great gifts.

Just a thought. I have stayed in NYC quite a few times. Hotel rooms tend to be smaller in NYC than any other city I have traveled to.
In order to get a room that would somewhat comfortably fit 5 people you may need to look at a Marriott or Hilton. I’ve noticed they tend to have the same footprint/size as other cities.

I second this! They're very fun and good food. We did this one a few years ago. Even has a DJ a few days a week.

Love Korean BBQ

I love a subway, in theory, but you couldn't pay me to ride one at night. I'm an above ground gal after dark for sure.

ETA since the downvotes... I had a very uncomfortable experience with some "patrons" late night on the subway last trip to NYC. I'm from Baton Rouge, so it's not like I don't encounter all different types all day long. Not exactly scared of your average crackhead. I just didn't like being confined with them.

Not a huge fan of staying in Times Square, there's always a mass of people every time you walk out of your hotel. I typically stay in Chelsea which is further south but the Renaissance Chelsea is a great property and close to the subway lines.

You can also stay near Grand Central, there is a Westin there but I haven't stayed myself.

Ultimately, if you want to keep the budget low, its New York so how much time will you really spend in the room, I found the Aloft Chelsea to also be a decent option.

I'm planning on checking out the Le Meridien on 5th Avenue on my next trip in a couple of months and will report back.

I think I have a lot of good NYC recs, but if this is your first time, and you are seeing shows every night, and you are 4 in one room I would just stay at one of the chain hotel spots in/near Times Square. Will have bigger rooms and walkable from the theaters each night.

The Marriott Marquis is huge, and you are in the middle of it, but why not embrace it, and again you avoid needing transportation after the shows.

It is like staying at the center of the universe. Great location for easily walking to plays or catching a train to anywhere in town. Downsides are it can be expensive, and there is a mass of humanity in Times Square every time you walk out the door. I probably would find something a little outside the Square now, but I stayed at the MM my first visit, and it was really perfect for that.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Yes it will be 4 of us and we would like to try to walk back from the shows if possible. I will check into the Marriott. I was also looking at the RIU Plaza Manhattan because that seemed close to all the theatres we would be going to and within my budget. The rooms looked a little small but I don’t think we will be in the room very much.

I’ve been pricing things out for the first week of June, but I didn’t know if the prices typically drop at some point. I know it is really hot there right now, but it looks like the prices are cheaper for say next week compared to next June just didn’t know if July was a lower season to go

RIU Plaza Manhattan

We stayed in the RIU times square this past spring break and I'd highly recommend it. Given I hadn't been to NY in many years so I can't compare, the Times Square location which is VERY close to the Manhatten location, was very new. We stayed there because I have a family of 5 and it was one of if not the only one that slept 5.

My wife booked it but it was very reasonable at the time.

My wife did 4 shows in 7 nights, she would have done more but I cut her off. Staying next to Times square was great my wife had no issues going to a show alone or taking our daughters without me. The cheap ticket place to get last minute tickets is also very close to Times Square I believe (this is not my area of expertise clearly) so my wife was able to snag some there very easily. So I'd strongly recommend looking into that.

I'm not a show person, but it was fairly easy for her to snag open tickets so I'd suggest just booking 1-2 of your favorite shows and then trying to find some last minute deals if that suits you.

That looks like a great location, and the teens will love being in the hustle and bustle of it all. Just know that NYC is extremely walkable, and the city blocks on the map aren't all that big in real life. Most of the places you want to see you can do on foot, assuming everyone in your party is reasonably fit.

Even for the Met Museum, you can walk up to the base of Central Park and take a carriage ride or pedicab to the museum and see the park. Then do a slow stroll on your way back down, and get some lunch along the way. The Statue of Liberty will obviously require the subway or an Uber, but that's easy, too. Oh, and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge! Such neat views from that vantage point.

Also, I *highly* recommend SUMMIT One Vanderbilt for a view of the city skyline. It's a super cool immersive experience, and your teens will love it!

We are planning on doing the majority walking but my daughter wants my grandmother to come because we have always done 4 generation girls trips and my grandmother loves theatre so my daughter wants this to be a 4 generation girls trip/senior trip, so honestly that’s why I was trying to get in the heart of as much as we could and then if we need to get an Uber or something to other activities we could.

I will check out Summit One because that will be something cool my daughter and I can do just us.

If you book the Marriot Marquis, try to get a high floor room with a view of Times Square. The girls will enjoy snapping pics of all the huge digital screens in the square. We lucked into one, and it was pretty cool for a first timer.

From AI:

To ensure a Times Square view, guests should specifically request a room with a Times Square view, or consider booking a "Deluxe Times Square View Room" or a "Premier Corner Room".

I've been looking at similar hotels for October when I'm taking my mom to see a show. She's 83 and never been to NYC. You are way too early to book. I would however, go to booking . com and look and search hotels near Times Square, Bryant Park, Grand Central, Midtown. I think 5 nights for $2000 is a big stretch. Make sure and look at all in pricing as the tax is over 15% and adds a big chunk! I'm looking at the San Carlos (great location for you) or some of several Marriott brands near Bryant Park due to proximity to subway to go sightsee. Hotel rooms in NYC along with space everywhere in NYC is small. You will be surprised at how close together tables are in restaurants, merch in stores may feel packed in. Space is just limited there and people are just always on top of each other. I haven't stayed there, but the Radio City Apartments also get a lot of recs on many travel boards. They are older and not updated or fancy decor, but in a great location and priced well. You will also pay a premium for 2 beds in a room instead of a king.

Pricing will change a lot between now and then, but it could be up or down. I'd book in Jan/Feb at a rate that can be cancelled and then keep checking prices all the way till right before the trip.

Also, check on restaurant pricing as well. Lunch is priced more like dinner and dinner is $$$$. You can eat more cheaply, but it's always an eye opener to me.

Adding to this - I stayed in the Marriott Marquis in Times Square last time I was there for just a couple nights, and there were 4 of us as well (my nightmare). We had two FULL size beds. Not queen size.

Make of that what you will.

Five nights sharing a full sized bed with someone and 1 bathroom between 4 people would tempt me to sleep in the lobby.

EDIT: Marriott Marquis very well may offer suites/larger options. That's just what we were stuck with in a standard room with top floor Times Square view back in November.
