Going to be staying over on Seacrest Beach for five days. Does anyone have any experience with early morning surf fishing in the area? I was thinking about bringing some rides with me, but wasn’t sure if it would be worth my while.

I saw a 12lb redfish and small shark get caught from shore last week. Also, a lady got tagged by a sting ray.

This with some 1-3 oz weights

Bring a small net to catch sandfleas and use them as bait

My son and his buddies when they were young would do it every year when we would go.
Pretty much only catch the following.
Small sharks on cut bait thrown out as far as they could cast at sunrise or after dark.
Pompano/jack crevel/ white trout/lady fish and needle nose on pompano jigs or sabiki rigs tipped with shrimp.
But they would fish for hours, that was before they were 15-16 and started noticing girls in bikinis.

Girlfriend spent 5 days not too far from there a few weeks ago and they were catching pompano & permit everynight with carolina rigged sand fleas.

This guy has a guide service near there and shows how to rig them.

This is the way. Throw it out, let it soak.

August in the gulf is breeding season for stingrays. Some years it can get bad.

If you can get up, a big top water or spoon in the surf at day break will always get some action. Once the sun comes up it's over

Later catch sand fleas on the beach then rig them on a Carolina rig.

We just got back last week. We always bring a fly rod (because it breaks down and is easy to pack). We usually catch some decent size lady fish (baby tarpon) in the surf which is fun.

This year saw a ton of small Spanish mackerel in the surf which kept cutting our leaders.

Also saw a lot of stingrays, which we usually don't see and had our fair share of small sharks come in on us.

Find a deeper cut that that has a rip current. Throw where the out flow is past the bar. The rip current flushes bait out through the rip. Predator fish hang out there.

Ladyfish at sunrise and sunset is a blast. They will damn near bite a bare hook when they start running the beach and popping on top.

Fun as hell on a fly rod.

Sound advice. A 1 oz or so Kastmaster on about a foot of wire will catch spanish, jacks, trout, redfish, flounder, ladyfish...just about everything. Fish the first ditch, parallel to the shore and try to find a cut to the second ditch. If they ain't hitting with the wire get rid of it but usually its a reaction bite and they don't mind.

There are also a lot of rat reds in the surf early....it can be a lot of fun catching 2 pound redfish on a 5 weight rod.

Amen. Also will eat a bubble float and straw rig with abandon if you don't fly fish...but anyone can handle a fly rod well enough to catch ladyfish in the surf....

Just go early and try them out. You can always throw a gold spoon or a chrome rattle trap and catch something. Lady fish bluefish whatever. Not fit to eat, but fun to reel in.
