Can good deals still be found in pawn shops?

It’s honestly been a year or 2 since I’ve been in one, but it seemed like they wanted way too much for what they had. I’m thinking about stopping in a few to try to find an old 1100, but I feel like I’d probably be wasting my time.

Nope, Not like the old days and before internet gun sales. Seems like all the pawn shops base their pricing off MSRP.
After repeated unpleasant dealings with local firearms retailers I made the jump to online purchases and haven't looked back. Sometimes 40-50% off MSRP plus a 15.00 FFL transfer fee and a few of the online retailers don't charge tax shipping to LA.
Most used pawn shop firearms are priced much higher than I could pay for a brand new one.

Seems like pawn shops look up the new price and use that. maybe they are expecting people to chew them down 40% but thats not my bag.

I have had only terrible experiences as a potential buyer in pawn shops. The small number (~3) may allow one to disregard my experiences, but I will never be both broke and/or in need of some junk enough to darken the door of any pawn shop again, even if I live to be a thousand years old.

The pawn shop down the road sells beat up stuff from harbor freight for more than it costs new. The only thing in there that is somewhat reasonable are the guns. Everything else is a ripoff.

When I had a friend who owned a pawn shop, he would call me when he had something in good shape and was maybe something I had him look out for. He’d would transfer for $10. In store guns that I was interested in always had a price tag. They were not that bad but he’d grab a gun off his rack and just tell me what he’d have to have for it I never felt violated based on knowing what it was worth. Good dude and wished him a happy retirement when he sold out. His son was not interested in keeping the store.
CSB but, yes, currently pawn shop gun prices are outrageous. I found a place with consignment guns and prices are much too high there as well.
Online seems the way to go.

During Covid I found a Ladysmith model 60 3” pre lock almost NIB at a small pawn shop near me. Guy was asking $425 for it. Told him I had $400 cash I could give him and he took it. Solid deal on a gun worth $750. The older 3” guns are very popular.

Same thing online with Texas gun trader. The prices are often as high or higher than Academy or online. Why would I buy used shite from a random dude in a parking lot when I can get the same thing new at Academy?

I absolutely love buying stuff secondhand. There is an art to bargaining and making deals. But lately it seems that a lot of stores that specialize in such - pawn, antique, junk, estate, etc... are very proud of their junk.
Another place thats gotten really proud lately is the Restore. It used to be a lot of surplus building material. Lately half their stuff is priced on par with the cheap stuff at Lowes. They tried to sell me a scratch and dent "new" appliance for MORE than Lowes, and told me the warranty is better. GTFO man there is not a chance.

My story is probably one in a million but I found a national match m1a at a pawn shop in Shreveport and the guy sold it to me for the stock m1a price (like 8 or 900).

And I realize that at least some of those people are just making a high opening offer, but still. Pricing it a new price just makes me think you’re a shithead.

98 times out of 100, no. Like others have mentioned, they're usually asking new prices for used (sometimes very) firearms. I always stop, especially when I'm passing through random towns. Everyyyy once in a while they'll have something that they don't know what they've got. Usually older ones. I have picked up a few nice auto fives and JM stamped marlin this way.
