July 11 (Reuters) - Support for shareholder resolutions pressing U.S. companies for environmental and social reforms fell to 16% on average for the 12 months ended June 30, half the rate of three years ago, data from Morningstar shows.

Analysts, activists and investors attributed the trend to hostility to climate and diversity matters from U.S. President Donald Trump and other Republicans, coupled with the reforms many companies have already put in place. Top proxy advisers also reduced their support.

quote:

Large investors seemed reluctant to support resolutions that might attract questions from customers or political criticism, said Leslie Samuelrich, president of Green Century, a climate-focused asset manager.

Its own resolutions calling for reports on greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity, for instance, won 13.6% on average this year, against 21% in 2024.
Samuelrich said big investors "don't want to lose clients, and they don't want a target on their backs".

Marc Lindsay, managing partner of shareholder advisory firm Jasper Street, said better company reporting of emissions or workforce diversity was giving executives ammunition to argue against the need for further reforms.

quote:

Lindsay's firm found top proxy advisers Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis each backed environmental resolutions less often this year, and that ISS backed social resolutions less often. Both have faced pressure from Republicans and business groups.

ISS declined to comment.

Glass Lewis said a reason for its lower support may be that "many U.S. companies now meet baseline environmental expectations, providing shareholders with visibility into how related risks are being managed."

It’s not trendy now and the most comical part is that the investors really don’t actually GAF, they just want to show that they did it to look a certain way.

Yea companies investing in climate is coming to the end of its life cycle. The US has made strides in the area over the past 20 years and there is only so much you can do.

It was all just dog and pony to put themselves in position for government money.

Some will hang on in hopes of a change of sides in 2028, but most will follow the current tide.

Climate activists ruined their movement by making alarmist predictions 25 years ago that are now mocked endlessly online.

We were promised that by 2025, coastlines all over the world would be gone

We were promised mass displacement of people

Etc

Never happened

Profits will always drive motivation.

When the tranny thing because the cause du'jour, many companies bought the line that it would help maintain profits because the LGTBQ+ANUS69! crowd wouldn't stage messy, nasty boycotts of their businesses/products. Instead, people started flocking away from the pro-frick-your-kids-up-like-David-Reimer mentality so you now see a waning support for it among the business community (in general).

The same thing is happening with Climate Theology (called that because of the fanatical devotion to its fear-porn by many of its adherents), especially as we keep missing these "milestone" prediction points in time (Arctic will be completely free of sea ice by 2013, glaciers at Glacier National Park will have disappeared by 2020, permanent flooding of parts of NYC by 2015, etc). Most of the revenue generated by moving to "green" aspects comes from government grants, tax credits, etc. As those dry up (or can't keep up with the rising costs of the latest "green" craze technology), profits take a hit.

It goes further back than this. Our weekly readers in elementary school in the late 1960's-70's were telling us we would be in an ice age by now. Then later the Ozone Hole was going to kill us all with instant skin cancer. It was only after those that they got around to global warming.

Anyone in STEM who falls in love with their models or someone else's has lost a critical bit of wisdom that used to be drilled into us: "All models are wrong. Some are useful." The mass media, pols and grifters of all stripes want you to believe models are unimpeachable, so long as the models predict what they make money off of.

Political criticism is why ESG was being implemented in the first place.

How much on this was done by “political blackmail” by Biden and Obama.

Threats of investigations and/or denial of contracts.

Quite possibly the most relevant dictum for the last couple of generations to actually grapple with.

The object is to continue refining the models - NOT to cement them in place and prosecute those who want to approach life with a more proper attitude.

Not so much backing away, but rather, they are slowing down on implementing new policies.

There’s a lot more unofficial policies being implemented these days, especially surrounding diversity. There might not be strict policies in place about hiring and promotion quotas, but they know the numbers they are expected to hit so the executives have their “ammunition” when the company reports on their diversity figures.

Absolutely agreed. I mentioned the more recent failed predictions because the devotees have short memories and they are quick to deny the former freezing alarmists because "we have better technology now". It gets more difficult for them to hide behind that excuse when the failed predictions are more current.

The story is as old as Wall Street. They just follow the money. They never believed in it in the first place. If the next administration does a 180 and pushes it again, the votes will change right back.
