Jackson Cunningham, of Hoover, and Nicole Moore, of Calera, both died early Saturday when they were struck by an off-duty Escambia County sheriff’s deputy who was on his way home from working an off-duty job.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the 47-year-old driver from Pensacola was traveling east on State Road 292 when he struck the pedestrians while they were crossing the road.
“The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office employee was not actively patrolling nor on duty,” said FHP Capt. Jason King. “The Florida Highway Patrol remains diligent and focused on our investigation into this crash, as we are with all of the ones we unfortunately must investigate.”

Tragic. Hadn’t heard that the deputy had his lights off. Happened on the main highway through Perdido Key, right?

Im assuming cops dont typically have their lights on just driving home from work. . We will need to wait to see who is at fault.

Driving with no headlights is just plain stupid and careless. Throw the book at him.
That said, I am not a fan of newer vehicles that light up the dashboard and instrument lights even when the headlights are turned off. It can lead to situations like this.

Just plain drunk, would be the way to bet.
Did anybody do a blood draw that didn't get "lost"?

Uh-oh. There is a big yellow sign saying "CROSSWALK" and another saying STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK.
There is also one of those buttons you push that makes the bright yellow strobes go off. You know those strobes that could be seen from space at night?
Did it say if the dashcam was on?

Why is he in a patrol car if he’s not patrolling?

Sounds like he was driving home after leaving a security job. Probably was sitting in the parking lot with his headlights off at the job and never turned them back on when he left.

This is awful. Sadly, we will never get the full story from the police.

Yeah if you’re working private security, why are you allowed to use your public cruiser? Private job seems like it should be your car getting used. Now the state has more incentive to protect him because their car was used to kill 2 people.

I think BRPD and Sheriff go through those offices for extra duty work and have their cruiser. I really doubt it was a direct deal between the business and cop. Not sure how other states do it though.

Truly sad. As a parent, losing a child just may end me.
Why in TF would someone drive without lights at 3am is unconscionable to me.
