An Ohio one-year-old has died after a family dog attack. The baby was grabbed by the jaw/neck by the family’s pit bull, which immediately severed the child’s carotid artery.

The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s office tells WJW sister station 7News the 1-year-old girl was with her mother at home on July 2 when the attack happened.

As the mother was going about her normal daily activities, she bathed her daughter, picked up clothes from the bathroom floor, and headed towards the laundry room when her toddler followed her. That’s when the family’s pit bull attacked the baby.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell says the pit bull “caught the baby right near” the jaw/neck, immediately severing their carotid artery.

“The death of the child was instantaneous; there was nothing that could be done,” Sheriff Campbell said.

The mother of the child also sustained injuries that are consistent with defense wounds, and after getting the dog away from her child, she called 911.

The family has three dogs, including the pit bull that attacked the child. The family says the pit bull had shown aggression towards the other two dogs, but never people or anyone in the family.

The father of the child was out in the woods working when the call came in, and the sheriff’s office went out to get him.

According to the sheriff, the pit bull was very important to the father, and he was shocked by what the dog had done.

“Our detectives will turn over all the information they gathered during their investigation to the prosecutor’s office, but we do not expect any charges to be filed,” Sheriff Campbell said.

Sheriff Campbell says this was an accident, and all of the information his detectives collected during their investigation matched what the parents told them.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy to formally determine the cause of death.

The pit bull was euthanized on the same day of the attack.

I cant imagine losing one of my kids... much less to a pet.
Breed needs to be eliminated. We owned one. Best dog ive ever had. But never again. Too many stories like this. Just eliminate them. They aren't pibbles. They aren't nanny dogs. This isn't the early 1900s. Just get rid of them.

A 6-yo was airlifted from Slidell to a trauma hospital in NO from a Pit attack yesterday. It was also their pet.

I see no redeeming purpose to having one that you cannot get with any other dog.

PSA: All pit bull parents should be sent to the electric chair if their dog mauls their kids.

Those stupid parents think “oh my pit bull is different and calmer”. Those are bred dogs for a reason: anger

Once again, frick you you heathens. Defenseless kid dead bc you wanted to be a cool pit bull parent.

How about before it happens?

Some breeds aren't meant to be around vulnerable, dependent populations.

We have a family friend that has a sweet "pibble"... we don't visit often. Dog really is nice... until he ain't one day.

Trashy neighbors had a pit that jumped their fence.
I've maced that thing away from an 8th grader getting off the bus. It tore a female jogger's arm open in front my house a few months later.
The owners didn't care, the HOA has no teeth. Fortunately it was exterminated, because the jogger had a damn good lawyer.
But in the end the owners still own the house and live there, I'm pretty sure they're currently raising another devil spawn.

House next door to me and the house next to them both have pits or pit mixes. I have a couple 9 mm rounds waiting to enter their noggins if either of them get close to my wife or kid. No questions asked.

If you remember Stephen Peterman, LSU and NFL lineman, His niece's daughter was 30 days old when the family pit drug her out of her cradle in the middle of the night and ate her.
THe only good pit is a dead one.

11 years ago my daughter was mauled by my next door neighbors dog. We are fortunate that she is still with us.

both the physical and emotional trauma she endured that day and beyond I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Coworker told me about how their pit bull attacked and killed their other dog. I wasn’t surprised. Those things were selectively bred over a couple hundred years to fight bulls and other dogs. Positive artificial selection for aggression was a breeding tool. Should one ever run into my yard he’s getting lead poisoning.

Every pitbull should be sterilized so that the breed can die off.

Why are you calling dog owners parents?

There’s no such thing as a dog parent. You have a fricking pet. That’s it
