Once known as the murder capital, New Orleans has reduced violent crime to new levels.

Since the beginning of the year, the city has had 54 murders, including the Bourbon Street attack.

This is the fewest through the first six months of the year since 1960.

14 of the 54 was the terrorist

“We’re able to build from 1960 to 2023, from the official data. And then we have or we’re able to track through data directly from an NPD, the monthly totals for 2024 and 2025,” said Asher.

The decline is part of a national trend with both believing several initiatives could have played a role.

“A great sign as far as, what the NOPD is doing. I also think Troop NOLA is a big part of this. The governor and the state police certainly have a role to play in this success story,” said Crouere.

A study posted here recently showed that the decrease in murder is due to improved medical care, not a decrease in attempted murder.

Shootings are way down too, so that does not completely track.

Is this the up-side of a depopulated city?

I’m pretty sure they haven’t made significant breakthroughs in the past three years. Shootings are also down.

Troop Nola has quietly and systematically taken large numbers of violent criminals off the streets and when they arrest them the State handles the prosecution and is able to do a much better job getting their bail raised and keeping them locked up. NOPD is getting more credit for it than they deserve, but they are operating better than before as well but a large part of that is that the State Police have come down and taken a tremendous amount of the pressure off of them. Jeff Landry gets a lot of flak and deservedly so on some issues, but the one issue he has knocked out the park is helping New Orleans decrease violent crime substantially.

Meh. I’m sure that helps a little, but it’s a very small amount unless you were comparing back to numbers in the 1990’s or something.

Also, In before the post saying the murders are still happening, but not being reported. Those people that post that are special.

The city limits of Bham have seen a similar drop. Hard to know all the reasons, but late last year they did arrest a guy that they think is responsible for at least 14 murders. My amateur hypothesis is that if you can luck out and take a few of the worst of the worst off the street it will really drive these good results.

The post-Covid spike is going away almost everywhere.

There are a few exceptions, like Baton Rouge and Birmingham or Huntsville.

I got into this a bunch last year when people were pushing the "The stats are made up/fake" bullshite and I had to keep educating them on how dumb they were.

People shite on Landry, rightfully so for some things.

But he told the state troopers to crack down on the bullshite in NOLA and it has worked.

He was determined to make sure NOLA becomes productive and not the cost-sink for state funds.

I understand that the 14 people that died were murdered, but I really wish there was a way to separate out political or religious zealotry based murders from the murder list.

Kirkpatrick gets a lot of flack here but she has really done a good improving morale at NOPD and dealing with the consent decree.

Troop NOLA has made a huge impact here though, I don’t think anyone can deny that.

While this is true, the pre-Covid numbers in NOLA were significantly higher than the current numbers

True, but this is historically low levels, below even pre-Covid. As some have noted, even the biggest of NOLA haters have to acknowledge these levels. Hopefully they stick for awhile.
