The Problem with the new Superman Movie

I’m a comic book geek and self admitted lover of the super hero genre of movies…. With that being said something has been bugging me about this new Superman movie about to drop but I could not put my finger on it until today.
It isn’t Superman that has me disinterested in this movie - - it is the fact that this will be the SIXTH TIME we have seen him deal with Lex Luthor on screen.
Imagine if every Batman movie he fought the Joker over and over and over.
With so many great storylines- -why do they keep defaulting to this one two-dimensional “villain”?

I think the problem is that it looks like a cartoon.

Outside of Brainiac and Doomsday, there isn't much of a rogue's gallery to pick from.
Man of Steel already covered Zod, and Doomsday was in BvS. With this being a reboot and the establishment of the universe, I wasn't expecting them to jump right into Bizarro or Darkseid.
Just really slim pickings, which makes it all the more incredible how Supes has managed to stay relevant for so long.

Superman has to be the least interesting superhero. But to be fair I think everyone is just completely burned out on comic book movies.
However the next genre can't seem to find itself. Looks like cheaper rom coms are coming back

what villain would you suggest? I mean that too, not being a smartass.
Superman is too powerful and that's why most of his movies aren't interesting. When you are the baddest guy on screen, then the conflict isn't very interesting.
Batman is a guy with money and cool shite. He can lose and that is what makes him a more interesting movie than Superman.

Superhero movies are not made for comic book fans. If anything they are made with disdain for comic book fans.

This. Everybody's the most powerful thing with superhuman powers that enables them to choose when they can save the world, or not. It's boring. Not a comic book aficionado, but I wouldn't be surprised if that group is extremely disenchanted with movie versions. And I'd bet they'd prefer miniseries versions done by HBO/etc.

He has all the physical power imaginable yet still has to wrestle with moral choices. It shows that power isn’t everything, it’s only boring when it’s written poorly which is the problem with modern Superman. It isn’t the character it’s the writers who’ve failed Superman.

Eh, we can all see that (not saying it's cheap to point that out on your part), but if you have all that power, it just gets boring. I've seen two Marvel films - Ironman and the first Avengers (I think those are "Marvel" films). Just don't see the need to see a story with Thanos in it. Don't know what comic book stories are out there, but Superman et al have been played out, imo, though if someone can make a buck making another film, good for them.

He's a good villain and the most "intimidating" big screen Lex has probably been Spacey's so there's plenty of room to actually do the character some justice.

It's the "man vs god" story.

Maybe thats the only Villian they have the rights to. Don't forget that there are concurrent film series being made.

Superman has a great rogues gallery - Brainiac, Metallo, Parasite, Mongul.

The villain isn't necessarily an issue, but this thing feels like a CW show with slightly better effects and that's a problem.

Well it’s the old conundrum of absolute power corrupting absolutely turned on its head. He has to make the same moral choices someone who doesn’t have any power at all has to make because of his morality and that can be very interesting if it’s done properly. The problem is, like you say these writers are more focused on the spectacle and abilities than they are what the character is really all about and what makes him relatable. Go back to the old Superman movies, they focused more on the pitfalls of being Clark Kent because that’s where the drama and conflict is with Superman.

BvS had the right idea, they just did a terrible job executing it. What would happen if an all powerful being showed up?
I think the new Superman will touch on the moral dilemma that Superman brings, the problem is once again they are trying to use the movie as a way to build a universe. Really not digging the idea that Superman isn’t the first one to show up, that superheroes have always kind of been a thing in this universe, and that it’s jammed with a lot of villains/allies.

Supes’ rogues gallery isn’t very deep.
Outside of Luthor and rogue Kryptonians like Zod, you generally have Metallo, Parasite, Doomsday, Braniac, Bizarro, and Mxy.
Mxy and Bizarro are generally comic villains.
Metallo is a poor man’s Terminator with a Kryptonite power core.
Doomsday isn’t really a starter villain.
Parasite or Braniac could be useful, as Braniac is all powerful while Parasite by his nature weakens anyone he is around.

I like how the Edward Norton Hulk movie skipped over the origin story because they had just done the Ang Lee Hulk movie less than a decade before.
