Several former players having issues with the statement "on the roster of the World Series winning Chicago White Sox" when he pitched 40 quality innings for the club and pitched 5 innings with two saves (four total for that postseason) against the Astros.

Knowing a bit about how these things are done (witness my posting handle), on the weekend this was probably posted by an intern who tried to get cute with language instead of simply and clearly stating “he was on the White Sox’s World Series championship team.”

Interns aren't supposed to get cute. Someone will have a chat with him.

When I was an editor and oversaw writers I would constantly tell them don’t use 10 words when 5 will do. But so many people in the news business are frustrated Faukners.

When I was an intern, I was used mainly as an extra cameraman, except one occasion when I had to interview a basketball coach. I had no opportunities to get cute.

I don’t see the problem with what ESPN said at all.

Was he on the roster? Yes
Did they win the World Series? Yes

It was just an announcement

It is worded a bit weird. I think they probably should’ve wrote it like “a two-time All-Star pitcher for the Chicago White Sox and member of the franchise’s 2005 World Series Championship team…” That would’ve been more concise, still factual and not made it come across like he was an unimportant inning-eater in blowouts in 2005.

That said, I don’t think it was intentionally disrespectful or anything like that and think it’s a bit of an overreaction to give ESPN “heat” for it.

"Cardale Jones who was on the 2014 Ohio State championship team passed away"

If that was posted about Jones who was important to the Championship people would be upset. It neglects all of the accomplishments of the player and what they meant to the team.

I remember Adam Sheffner getting heat when he tweeted out that Dewayne Haskins died. He mentioned something about him under investigation for something.

I mean I don’t think so really. It wasn’t a tell all it’s a 150 character tweet. Could it have been better sure but it’s not like what they said was terrible

When discussing a player, if you say he was on the roster, there is a clear implication that he did not contribute anything significant to the team.

It's a death announcement.

Why are you being obtuse here?

That's so old school. The inverted pyramid has been flipped upside down...unfortunately.

Oxzie Guillen called in the big guy to close out game 1 of the World Series. I was such a big Astros fan back then. Really stunk how all four of those games could have gone either way.
