I went into a cigar shop before we won the national championship in baseball in 2023 and got a cigar. Fast forward to 2025 and I did the same, except got an assortment of Padron and Plasencias. They’re amazing.

So what’s another good brand of cigar? I really like the Padron I’m smoking now. What makes a great cigar?

CAO
Diesel
Eva Marie
Rocky Patel
Oliva

Those are some of my usuals. Diesel is currently my favorite. CAO makes some really good cigars, also. My son is an Oliva guy.

I’ve found you can find some really crappy expensive cigars and some really good cheap cigars. You just have to be willing to find bad ones in order to find good ones.

Warped
Illusione
Roma Craft
Tatuaje
Fuente
Davidoff

Big fan of all these brands. As far as quality control & construction go Davidoff can't be beaten.

Davidoff if you’re OT rich.

Gran Habano Cigars and A. Fuentes if you like a mild smooth smoke. If you want a really mild cigar smoke a Leon Jimenez. Makes a great morning cigar.

Alot comes down to personal preference.

Mild or bold tobacco. Good rule of thumb is color of wrapper. Light color - mild. Dark color - bold.
They have special terms like Connecticut for mild. Maduro for bold.
I find newer smokers like mild to medium at first.

Size - two factors
Diameter - called ring guage, measured in 1/64 of an inch
Length - usually in inches.

For example, robusto is 5 x 50....
5 inches long by 50/64 inches in diameter.
Toro is 6 x 52
Corona 6.5x48
Churchill is 7x48
-- time is usually the decision here. How long do you have to enjoy it?

Filler material
Which country do you like? Trial and error.
Nicaragua, Dominican, other?

Don't light it with a bic or zippo. Use butane or cedar sticks.

Lots of good brands out there.
Drew estate, my father, Jamie Garcia, Olivia, rocky Patel, vijae, perdomo, Fuente, aj fernandez...
And on and on.

All the cigars by Padron are super solid. I love the 1964.

Arturo Fuente, Tatuaje and Foundation are my average go-to’s.

This is a golden rule.

I loved my triple jet Xikar. Unfortunately my kids got their hands on it and the matching cutter. They haven't been seen since.

All solid choices for beginner stogie enthusiasts. Oliva is up there too.

Realistically expect your budget to be $6-10 dollars per cigar. No point getting into high end stuff in the beginning if you can't really appreciate it. I know I can't so I don't go out of my way to spend over $10/cigar. I recommend to buy sampler packs because it keeps it interesting, but if you like a certain cigar specifically, you can load up on that. Make sure you have a humidifer or a humifier baggy for them- nothing worse than a dried up cigar.

If you don't care for the nuances of each cigar, I suggest best budget alternative that has a decent build and cool factor - Casa Blancas. Casa Blanca Half Jeroboams are like $4-5/pop and last a good hour. It is a fat stockier cigar that's fun to puff on. Prominently featured in Cape Fear where Max Cady Smokes it. Regan loved those which is why the brand is called "Casa Blanca" i.e. "White House".

Punch vs cutter. Monte Cristo White Series/Churchill is an awesome mild stick.

La Gloria Cubana Serie R is a good smoke. Cohiba (red dot is my preferred) also very good but pricey.

Harder to find and expensive are Liga Privada No. 9 and Arturo Fuente Opus X.

A problem I have is with cigar names. The traditionalist and snob in me makes me stick to old Cuban sounding names. I have a hard time buying stuff like Moose Slobber, Demon Fire, or whatever other stupid names some cigars get these days though I’m sure some are very good.
