Actual cars on the lot in abundance to test drive.
What a pain in the arse purchasing a car has become.

Just buy a tesla. Zero haggling. You can go to a tesla location and test drive whatever you want. Easiest car buying experience ever.

Well, in my case im helping my father in law get into a car because his was totaled.
He either has to wait a couple months for the car he wants
Or
Go to a different car brand just because they have availability..

The days of shopping at a dealership are over and it can all be done online now. At most, I am walking in to sign and drive off, that's it.

During covid my teen needed a starter car
One Saturday I got on line at a dealership and found a (used) Nissan Sentra, low millage , in our price range, he liked the way it looked. Called and spoke to a young lady who was excited and invited us to come look at the car and test drive it.
We show up, no car. They try some bullshite about well someone came in and bought it between your phone call and you driving here (30 minutes).

Bought my CX 30 a few weeks ago. Everything done by text and DocuSign. Met halfway to finalize and hand over keys, which was a matter of minutes. If you know what you want, that's the way to buy. It's easier to negotiate and be an arse when the face to face is removed.

How can you call it easy when you have to drive to another state to pick the car up. Easy? It is harder than all other dealerships.

It's become so much easier now taking this approach.
You can search inventory online, you can email them to verify the car is still there, ask for the out the door or all-in price including whatever fees they try to tack on, pre-shop interest rates and e-mail multiple dealerships.

I bought 2 used cars recently for my kids. Separate dealerships and car manufacturers.
Found both cars online at local places.
1st dealership, we show up tell them were interested in a particular car and would like to look at it and drive it. Took 15 minutes for the guy to go inside and retrieve the keys. Test drive complete, negotiate the price and signed 3-4 papers and out the door.
2nd dealership, same thing, there to purchase a vehicle found online.
Tell the guy and he immediately tries to sell us a new car. I told him that I was only interested in 1 car on the whole lot.
Took him a solid 30 minutes to go inside and retrieve the keys, walks out, hands them to my daughter and says nothing.
Go inside after the test drive to negotiate price since there were a few minor issues that I found with the car.
Salesman is noticeably aggravated about the negotiation so I ask if there is someone else that can help me.
New guy comes in, agrees on the price. Now we have to go across the street to talk to the finance guy, even though I'm paying cash.
Another 30-minute wait, sign 15 papers and we're out the door.
Glad it's over and I dont intend on doing it again for a very long time.

Why not locate the car he wants and take a little road trip?
What car does he want and what state are you in?

My wife wants a new car. But she won’t tell me what kind of car she wants. I ask her. She says she hates going to a car dealership. And I ask how do you know what you like if you don’t go look at some?
But she has a point here. Drive up to any lot and tell them you just want to drive a couple to see if we like it / them. The salesperson has been trained to go straight to payment and credit terms that they know nothing about the car, and when you ask a “ballpark” price they won’t give it to you unless you go in.
Also I’ve tried the phone call for the OTD cash price and every single one wants my address, my name, my info, and tells me I have to come in to get a price. This goes for online too. I’ve shopped every Brand X dealership from Dallas to Baton Rouge. Same shite.

It can be, but it often depends on the dealer. We bought an SUV in 2018 and it was a relatively hassle free experience. 6 years later I bought a truck from the same dealership with the same salesman. Went in and test drove the truck. He then let me have it for the weekend to see if I wanted it. I decided I did, so on Monday I brought it back. The salesman gave me a price of ~$4k off the sticker. I told him I would buy it right there for $11k off the sticker. He went to his sales manager and 3 minutes later came back and said we had a deal.
Anytime I need service they get me in pretty quickly. Someone sideswiped me and caused some minor body damage...that they agreed to pay for. I took it to 3 body shops for a quote. One was really high. The other 2 wanted me to schedule an appointment a week out just for a quote. Then, even with the quote, all said it would be 45-60 days before I could get it in to be fixed. Annoyed, I called the dealership. They said to bring it in right now and they had the truck fixed within 4 days...at a price lower than the body shops.
I will be in the market in the next few years to replace the 2018 vehicle. I don't necessarily want the same make, but the satisfaction with the dealership makes it hard to go away from that make.
