McAllen at number 9 with 900k+ people is insane. I never realized how big population wise they were.

Providence and Bridgeport barely count imo.

Pawtucket is 6 miles away and was the Red Sox farm team for decades. And Boston is 45 minutes away.

Bridgeport is just a little bit farther out to two Major League teams.

Big difference compared to McAllen and the Louisiana cities

Includes minor league and independent league teams. No one in the cities with those even care. Map would have been interesting if it was only MLB.

They lost their affiliation with the Astros and then died a slow death as they were affiliated with one of the worst organizations in the MLB with the Marlins.

And then tried rebranding to the Babycakes which was also a disaster before they relocated North.

A Minor League team could survive in New Orleans with the right sized stadium and location in the city, IMO. Maybe one should be considered where the TopGolf was going to be.

The Rio Grande Valley is odd, in that it’s multiple metro areas right next to each other. McAllen is the biggest city in its metro area, but city proper is at 145K. Right next to it is the Brownsville-Harlingen metro area, which combines for over 400K. The whole lower RGV spans a few counties and has about 1.5 million people. The fact that there isn’t a massive city at the middle probably hurts it when it comes to getting a professional team.

The North has so much baseball. Providence shouldn’t be on the list as Boston is an hour down the interstate.

It’s too hot in the Deep South for games to be played in the summer.

And at the time, the Marlins had some big players matriculating through their minor league system. They just kept having them either skip AAA altogether or spend less than 50 games there.

I've always thought the metro areas around SLC were split up weird. There's 1.27 million within 40 miles of SLC and 2.66 million between Ogden and Provo. But it's split up into 3 separate metro areas officially.

Yep

You could give them major league teams and nobody in those towns would give a frick because they are die hard Red Sox fans already

I agree. They often were among the leaders in attendance in the NL. From 1979 to 1983 they drew 2 million fans during that period four times That was among the best in baseball during that time. There's enough people for a team and they do have a great history of supporting baseball.
