Young Pacers Fan & Mother Harassed by Mob following Game 7

Looks like a young boy and his mother were walking away from the arena last night in OKC when they were met by a mob who followed them, one eventually stealing the boy's hat off his head. Saw similar things happening in New York these playoffs too. Isn't it just wonderful that you have to fear getting mobbed leaving a sporting event in American cities, even if you have a young child? Will anything be done to the grown-looking man who stole this kid's hat for no reason? I've got a pretty good guess for that. Only a pussy would scare a child on the streets.
Sports fandom has never felt more cultish than it does today. IMO fans need to mature a little bit and realize this stuff is indeed just a game that they are not a part of it outside of putting more money in these millionaires' pockets. Celebrating a victory is OK, but the thuggery leaving the arenas needs to stop. It won't. I like the Pelicans, but would never devote my time to creating social media fanpages of my favorite player, etc. which is all rampant and normalized today. These people think they're on the team. All of this plays a part in the unsafe environment leaving arenas after playoff games. /rant Twitter Link of video

There’s a significant minority of pro sports fans that are unbelievably trashy.

Yeahhhh my nba team is better than your team and I had nothing to do with the outcome
Let’s curse out other people for wearing opposing colors
That will make me feel better about my life

Walked out of Ben Hill Griffin stadium in 2008 after Tebow and company hung 50 on us. They had grown men cursing at the females with us. I’ll never understand the thought process behind that behavior.

quote:Sorry to hear that. This behavior doesn't make any sense. I love the competition sports breed & the meritocracy of it all, especially these days, but this type of fan behavior turns me off of it a bit. I never would have thought I would get to the point where I really don't care who wins and loses tbh. Loved sports as a kid. Now I pretty much just watch LSU/Ole Miss FB and the first few weeks of the Pelicans season before the whole team gets injured, but I don't even really care about my teams winning either anymore tbh

eta: NIL has turned me off massively for college sports. Hard to believe fans of teams are willing to donate money to rent a QB for a season or two. Reading the letters that ADs write begging fans for more money to pay 19 year olds is pathetic as frick IMO. But i know that's an unpopular take around here

No excuse for that behavior especially when its a woman and a child.

Most of what you said was spot on, but I don’t think fanboying online over a player makes people think they’re on a team, which somehow correlates to thuggish behavior outside the arena.
I’ve been to hundreds of games, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this behavior after an NBA or MLB game. I see it mostly after CFB games.

That's fair. I used to frequent "NBA Twitter" and reddit and it is just very toxic which is why I feel this way. Dudes would be going at each other's throats defending their team's players like it was their own sons or brothers or something. I don't think it is healthy.

That’s piece of shite behavior and inexcusable. OKC is a pretty friendly city and most Pacers fans from what I read on Reddit had great interactions with opposing fans in the arena.
Sadly, I think people wanted to stand outside the arena and cause chaos with the win. I do think there’s a growing list of people that take part in this to get attention similar to Philly fans. Sad

NBA is probably the most insufferable social media group of the major sports, hands down. I think maybe there’s a connection to how the league is marketed around players and not names on the front of the jersey.
ETA - lots of the comments are suggesting the guy in blue is a YouTube prankster and the little boy Pacers fan is actually an adult and part of the prank group. If that’s true, this whole bit is pathetic.

So it appears those people are from Philly and came to OKC to harass those people? What a bunch of trash but not surprised at all.

I attended my first NFL game when I was 8, back in 1982. I didn't know anything about football. The game was the Redskins at the Saints. For some reason, my winter coat was dark brown, almost maroon (like the Redskins colors). I took shite that whole game. My dad thought it was funny but it got tense, especially as the game became a bit of a blowout. We hurried back to the hotel after the game. None of this stuff is new..

I never taunt an opposing fan after a game.

Stop watching that trashy sport.

Seems like a good way to get shot now days.
Eta - the fact that no one stepped in to help and a bunch of trashy assholes were just sitting there recording says a lot about everyone involved. You have to be scum of the earth to do some shite like that.
