An Umpire’s Take on Schnall

A good friend of mine is an umpire at the collegiate level. Has been in the SEC and SBC circuit for several years now. He doesn’t get LSU games considering he’s a fan.
In talking with him yesterday after the game, he made it known that Schnall has a reputation for being a major douche to umpires and frequently argues about the strike zone.
His take was pretty cut and dry. Guy had a reputation and he’s 100% certain the umps knew it as they all talk. Said Schnall had been chirping about the zone in game 1 also. By the rule book, ump did the right thing. Should there maybe have been some grace given the situation? That’s up for debate. But he would’ve been tossed in any other game, championship or not.

He was given a lot of warnings and decided he didn't want to take them.

This is what “the umpire acted too hastily” people refuse to see or acknowledge.

my kids grew up playing ball in Fl, he is the embodiment of almost every travel ball coach down there(when we were there,) softball or baseball, in other words all trash and no class

All postseason, being a dick was Coastal's M.O. We saw it in Friday's presser. Umps made it clear that wasn't happening early and Schnall doubled down on it. Completely took whatever juice was left from Coastal.

ESPn showed him warning him over and over and he just kept coming. He earned his ejection it wasn’t like he got ejected for chirping from the dugout

he wasn't warned, he was "shooed by a grown man"

You can learn all you need to know about him watching the post game presser. He admits he heard the warning twice and still chirped back about the 3 missed calls. He also talks about the two important words for his team, "owning it". He then proceeds to not own his frick up.

Its definitely unfortunate that him getting thrown out is the entire narrative everyone is talking about instead of the dominating performance by LSU, but don't be an a-hole and then play the victim.

It almost feels like he didn't think that they had much of a chance and was trying to give his team a spark. It was just so bizarre.

Exactly. He needed LSU to crack and was never able to get them to do it. Then he just had a meltdown for the ages.

He doubled down on being an arse and the Ump wasn't having it. Justified IMO. I was LMAO when they tossed the 1B coach too. Insert the - Oprah, "You get tossed, and You get tossed" GIF.

Coastal's ENTIRE self-identity is one of a "disrespected" program who is told they don't belong with the bigger conference schools. When you have that POV you view everything in the prism of disrespect. They were mad from the prior game because clearly the "umpires and NCAA didn't want Coastal to win a championship vs. a powerhouse/big money program." That manifested again, evidently in the very first inning on Sunday, in bad strike/ball calls because clearly the NCAA/Umps didn't respect Coastal enough to allow them a fighting chance. Then they disrespected Coastal again by giving a warning, and again by "shooing" the HC back to the dugout.
That perpetual chip on their shoulder was their undoing. They made mountains of disrespect out of nothing and weren't controlled enough in the moment to simply just let their play try to do the talking.

Their starter yesterday definitely got mentally dominated.
You knew it wasn't going to go well for him when he was trying to funnel the noise for the pitchcom before even throwing his first pitch.

You literally see Schnall say "Or what? Or fricking what?!" directly to the ump's face. They showed him fricking what

quote:This is what the announcers said during the game. If I heard them correctly, the rule is that once the umpire issues a warning, you can't leave the dugout. If you leave the dugout, it's an automatic ejection. The umpire did give him some grace as he came out of the dugout after the warning and wasn't immediately ejected. It was only after he continued lipping off that he was tossed.
By the rule book, ump did the right thing.
