Imagine reaching nine statistical criteria that only seven other major league baseball players out of more than 20,000 that have played the sport have reached, and even though each statistical milestone taken separately, in the long history of major league baseball, isn't particularly noteworthy but to be one of only eight players all-time to reach them all, how can that not be seen as anything but impressive?

Save you some time:
Looking at the list of baseball players that have scored 1,000 runs, had 2,000 hits, 400 doubles, hit 50 triples, hit 300 home runs, had more than 1,000 RBIs, walked more than 1,000 times, stole 200 bases and had a lifetime batting average of .270 or better,

All but two are black. Impressive qualifiers.

They just expand the set of statistics so they can find exclusive categories.

Expanding the set of positive statistics only intensifies the argument that the player is good, it would be different if they added a statistic the proved to the detriment of the player.

One of the most likable players within baseball, always seemed like a super class act.

I'm not particularly good at stats but I don't think this is always the case.
If a player had 100 triples but 399 doubles he wouldn't make this list, so there is an argument that expanding the categories in a certain way can leave off a better player. (I think, I could also be a moron). Making the list smaller in that way doesn't make the player still remaining "better."
Anyways, I'll go back to my lane now.

But this time they kept adding additional “impressive” stat criteria and presumably the number of players dropped dramatically

Yeah, but the .270 BA is fairly arbitrary. If you look at it relative to his number of ABs, the difference between .270 and .269 is 8 hits. Now, McCutchen is actually at .273. someone with the same stats at a .269 would be equal quality.

I saw him in his prime against Atlanta around 2011. He hit two triples in one game, based solely on his speed on the basepaths. He hit gappers that the outfielders had to chase a bit, but they did not fumble the ball or waster time getting it in. I still say that he is the fastest base runner that I have ever seen

Steep decline after 30. Was on a HOF trajectory

Great player, great guy, not a HOFer
