I am a young, able-bodied man with a wife and children in the Baton Rouge area. About three years ago, I lost my job due to the company closing and was unable to find any openings needing my skillset (trust me, I tried). It would be a cold day in hell before I would ever take a government handout or any type of assistance.

In order to support my family, I have since taken on any and every sort of job one could imagine. The jobs mainly include: specialized house maintenance (don’t want to get too particular here), lawn services, & landscaping. If it pays, and it is honest work, I not only happily and thankfully do it, I absolutely work my tail off. While I simply don’t have the knowledge to do some jobs, I have never turned down a job I am able to do because I need the money.

Here is my problem, and this is what I want you to think about regarding illegal immigration: Illegal immigrants have made it almost impossible for me to support my family in my current situation. Let me further explain:
-I am a great salesman and have spent countless days going door to door selling the services I offer (probably been to 1000 houses total) so I hustle.
-I graduated LSU with a 3.5 gpa in biology so I am decently intelligent.
-I have commercial lawn equipment, including a $10k zero turn mower so I have the tools.
-I had both my Horticulturist & Landscaping licenses for about 5 years at one time so I have the expertise.
-Every person I have ever done work for has been completely satisfied, and I always get more work from this, so I do good work.

The fact is I have found it nearly impossible to get work because illegal immigrants currently perform these jobs. It isn’t a cost issue. I am offering my services for less than what people currently pay for illegal workers, but I think more of loyalty issue.

If we deport the people here illegally, you will allow people like me to provide my family a life they deserve. I cannot currently do that. And there are a lot more people than you think in my situation facing the same problems I do with illegal immigrants. Just something to think about, thank you for taking the time to read.

God bless you, man.

I work in the O&G industry and while most of the time I'm employed, every once in a while we'll roll off a job with nothing lined up to do next. It may be a couple of days, sometimes when it gets slow it can be a few months.

When I don't have O&G work I do what you do. No shame in moving a lawn. I got my ABO card and would take deliveries, stock, mop and open my buddy's bar. Anything I can do to make some extra money while the good money is paused.

Work is work.

3.5 in Bio is very impressive. Have you considered other avenues with biology? You could teach bio at a private school, get a 2 year nursing degree or certification in medical field,...

I really respect people like you. Unfortunately, you are the exception rather than the norm as it applies to work ethic among actual Americans today.

After we kick all the illegals out, robotic mowers are going to become more popular and proliferate. Robotic edgers will follow. Have you given any thought to that?

Down Voters: Automation for yard work has already emerged. If he can't compete with illegals today, tomorrow brings new challenges. It may even force the illegals out of that business.

In south texas, annually my 7 palm trees needed leaf trimming. I learned that white guys trying to do the job would show up with very poor tools. Mexicans show up and get the job done

Don't ever change for anyone or anything. The Lord will watch over you, and just when you think you're at the end, he'll pick you up and help you along. Most admiring is your honesty and integrity..............something amazing will happen soon for you and your family and you'll be ok. My great-great uncle I grew up with, born in 1888 (that's not a typo!), had thousands of old sayings, the most strengthening to me was this: Live in faith, not fear, and you'll be stronger than you've ever dreamed...................

Is this *really* true or have we fallen victim to the "Lazy American" myth?

Every American I know currently employed works their asses off.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but I doubt the majority or even plurality of American Workers are lazy half assers. This is what the HB1 bros say, but it doesn’t make it true.

You sound like Neal Boortz. He advocated this type of thinking . Of course he qualified it. If you are constantly being downsized by employers and you have limited opportunities it makes sense in the long run to go to where the opportunities are.

Or.......

You could be a malcontent

Or

If you keep choosing to stay and things don't improve, you've made your choice and empathy for your plight becomes ever more minimal.

When I worked construction 27 years ago, there was not a single Latino on our crew, or on most of the ones that I saw in the plants. What I have seen is that many of the black workers, who had entry level helper or laborer positions, are the ones that have been replaced.

if you dont mind sharing, what kind of work were you doing when your company shut down?

Ill echo what another poster said about the plant jobs..The contractors are paid pretty good and seemingly hire regularly..look at the jobs in the lab, safety or environmental..even if you dont like this sort of work, the pay is good and would be a good place holder while you figure it out

The OP is clearly not afraid of a hard day's work, and I wish that could be said for everyone. The days that I go home with muscles aching from head to toe are far fewer than 20 years ago when I was in my 20s, but those days still happen frequently and keep me honest and humble.

You should have at least filed for unemployment benefits in the meantime. It's not like you haven't paid into the system.
