How Did Payton Do That In 2006

as a rookie coach with a rebuilt roster? In retrospect, that was a remarkable year. Then why the two years of mediocrity afterwards?

back those days you could still have an old school style training camp. The Saints sure as hell did at Milsaps.

He took the remnants of Haslett's teams and proved they could've won with proper management.

Jason David was pretty bad.

Haslett had reasonably good defensive personnel. That played right into an offensive coach being able to work on his side of the ball. There appeared to be relatively good, young free agent QBs out there (Brees, Culpepper). Many people thought Brees was done because of the shoulder/arm surgery, I know I did, and a lot also thought Culpepper was going to be a superstar. It seemed the stars lined up for the Saints with how that all went down.
There are some similarities to the current situation, though the QB predicament is obviously different. But maybe Shough will be that guy who everyone whiffed on taking. I can honestly say I do not know what to expect from the upcoming season.

Spot on! That Jackson training camp with no favorites. All jobs were up for grabs.

lol yes Drew, but people forget what we did in that 2006 draft. Bush, Harper, Jahri, Streif, Colston. Drew was still dealing with lingering shoulder issues in the beginning of that training camp and year. As the year progressed he got better but that team had Deuce, Reggie, Coston, jahri, Drew. Payton’s offensive scheme was incredible. It wasn’t just a Drew thing.

All this
As far as 07,08 We had the worst secondary in the history of secondaries, until 2012

Drew could hardly throw the ball 40 yards when the season started. The Saints hit HOMERUNS in that draft and they hit on Fujita and Shanle afterwards. They were loaded at RB. The Defense was solid. They hit big on the OLine as well. Brees didn't come on until later in that season.

Schedule also gets harder when you finish high. Great strategy by nfl for good matchups and also to keep teams moving up and down the standings over years.

Brees, healthy Deuce, draft gold helped. Defense was decent.

1. There were good pieces there already. Always are on bad teams. Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys had players drafted by Tom Landry. Bill Walsh's 49ers also had players he inherited. Pretty much all of Vince Lombardi's great Packer players were already there when he was hired.
2. 2006 Draft was pretty good.
3. Drew Brees.

The saints were a perennial 8-8 team.
2005 wasn’t exactly a normal year leading to that terrible record
and then he just added
Drew fricking Brees
Reggie Bush
Marques Colston
Kathi Evans
Roman Harper
Zach Streif
Scott Fujita
Scott Shanle
Simoneaux
Hollis Thomas
Omar Stoutmire

In the 2006 Season, the Saints played 15 of their 16 regular season games at Noon, the only exception was the notable MNF game Week 3 versus the Falcons.
There's something to be said for that regularity in process.

According to everyone else's fans the NFL loves the saints and wanted to capitalize off Katrina and give us a SB

Teams picking early also get easy schedules
They were 10-6 and the 2 seed, pretty much a down year for the NFC,

Some of Payton’s concepts in 06 were incredibly innovative at the time. Leveling and WR flexibility to sit in zones (Joe Horn was a master) to break routes were new concepts that worked very well with a cerebral Bree’s.

Did a good job using Bush and Deuce together.
