Jay’s quote “We’re not going to negotiate with terrorists”

JJ was asked about transfers leaving and what may have been some of the reasons. He was asked specifically about “if a kid enters the portal and takes a look around, he can come back to your team… right”
JJ responded with “That’s a very unique circumstance, so my line with that is we’re not going to negotiate with terrorists, so to speak. There has been one exception to that in my time here and the player ended up moving along anyways. It’s one of those things. You cannot play for me and not be all bought into what’s happening here. And if you’re doing that its like you have one foot out….. It’s like the Navy Seals. If somebody thinks about quitting the Navy Seals, they’re eventually going to quit. That’s just kind of how I look at it”
Edited to throw in this nugget at the end of his press conference. Talking about one and done type player. “That’s just how it goes. The team we’re playing has like 7 or 8 transfers in the lineup. Big fast people beat little fast people. Old and strong is better than young and weak”

Good. If you don’t want to be here then don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

I wish that every coach in America could enter a pact on this. All of the craziness is slowly killing my love for college sports. I'm glad I can at least hang onto baseball for a while longer

I struggle to understand the mindset of many young adults and athletes today. There seems to be a strong sense of entitlement, even when nothing has been earned. Instead of prioritizing teamwork and selflessness, the focus is often on individual wants and needs. If my child behaved this way, I would feel disappointed as a parent.
I was raised to push through challenges, no matter how difficult, because perseverance builds true character. That’s the same lesson we are teaching our children, with the hope that when they face adversity in college or their careers, they won’t simply walk away when things don’t go their way. Commitment and resilience are essential qualities, and I believe they shape a person’s success in the long run. I find it reassuring that Jay does not play into those games and treats it the same way. Buy all in whether its going your way or not.

Unless the terrorist is a 3B at NC State, or a pitcher at the Air Force Academy, Alabama, UCLA, UC-San Diego etc.....He'll definitely deal with terrorists from other programs if they can help him win games. That's a pretty stupid think for JJ to say. I hate these kids pimping themselves out every summer but it's hard to blame some of these kids who just aren't getting the opportunity at LSU.

I appreciate the sentiment, but it’s also a lot easier to have this mindset when you’re one of the premier destinations in the country.
I think have such a hard line stance would hurt you if you were at a smaller, mid-major school.

Pretty sure Jay made comments similar to this right after Kling left

Why does everyone think when a kid hits the portal it's because they are selfish or are seeking instant gratification. Plenty of kids see the writing on the wall that they path to playing time is non-existent or very narrow. Plenty of kids just want to maximize their chance to play in the small window they have.

I think he’s talking more about kids who want promises in return for staying. Not kids entering the portal in general. He was responding to a question about kids entering the portal but pulling their name out and coming back.
