I live out of state and have the itch to buy some mail order crawfish for a boil. I know it's getting late in the season, but don't have a good pulse on the current quality of crawfish since I don't live in Louisiana anymore and not eating them regularly.
Is it too late? Are they starting to get too big and hard-shelled right now? Should I even bother?

It’s almost mid June. It’s late. Yes. You can find some that are ok but prime time is over.

I called Schaeffer's Seafood in Bucktown yesterday and was told they are still getting pond raised and Belle River caught crawfish.

Pond raised are going for $2.50 a lb. and the Belle River are $3 a lb. and they said they could still get what they needed.

I'm considering doing one last boil this coming Saturday.

Pond crawfish are just about done, Spillway is just getting kicking. My buddy who fishes in the Spillway suspects he will be running traps till Sept the way its looking. If you do order some, try to order spillway crawfish.

Got some boiled crawfish from Rouse's yesterday. Many small sized but all were easy to peel.

Rouse's(Covington) guy said they will stop selling crawfish at the end of next week.

Way too hot hot to stand around a fire and boiling pot this time of year.

Boiling/eating crawfish after June 1 is a bigger sin than eating king cake before 12th night

You're right. It's BBQ season anyway.
