My great-uncle flew two bombing missions on D-Day....one hitting fortifications near the beaches and a second hitting marshaling yards in La Harve. He flew B-17's with the 549th Squadron, 385th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force from Great Ashfield, Suffolk.

My Dad was a NG on a B24 with the 15th AF in Italy. He said in the run up to D-Day they were hitting oil refineries in southern Germany and the Balkans.

It's a great book.
One day I want to go to the cemetery in Normandy. A cousin was there a few years ago and he said it a somber experience seeing row after row of crosses.

Unbelievable bravery by all those men that day. I can’t even imagine the horrors they faced.

I had a neighbor growing up who parachuted into France. Landed in a tree and a branch went through his guts and took an eye.

If you're after rows of crosses, there are American Cemeteries all over Europe, including at Nettuno, which is a 1/2 hour train ride from Rome. Every one I've been to is spectacular.

He probably had to tough it out for days before the invasion made it inland enough to connect with the paratroopers and establish hospitals for the wounded to even be taken to.
Getting left to fend for yourself for days after being impaled on a tree and losing an eye is tough to process in a world of uber eats, 24H ERs and western living.

We were in Normandy in the fall of 2019 and did a D-Day tour which included the cemetery.
It’s a very somber experience as the crosses seem to never end but it’s such a beautiful memorial to all those brave soldiers who were just doing their duty.
I highly recommend every American to go visit that place at least once if they’re able to.
