The Gastonia Police Department has filed criminal charges against the parents of a 7-year-old boy who died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road on last Tuesday evening. Parents, Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins, have been charged with Felony Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Child Neglect, and Misdemeanor Child Neglect. On Tuesday, May 27th, at approximately 5:55 p.m., officers responded to a reported traffic collision.

OT thoughts? Anyone know the area or more to the story?

I have 7 year old twins that ride their bikes through the neighborhood almost everyday with their buddies and never thought twice about it.

I couldn't imagine losing a child and then facing prison time. Sounds like that would be too much to bear.

This happen on a neighborhood street? I'm assuming yes like you.. this happening on a slow neighborhood street and was a total accident.. not really neglect I'd say. Kids play in streets like that all the time.

Or were the parents high on heroin or something when it happened?

The parents look like upstanding citizens. And by upstanding I mean trash.

In a Facebook post the Gastonia P.D. said, “While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic. In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.”

At this time, there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed. The driver continues to be cooperative and the incident remains under active investigation by the Gastonia Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Yeah, my parents would have been locked up. At 7 I was free to roam the neighborhood from daylight to dark.

NY Post says they had really high bond. No real info given other than they allowed him and his 10 year old brother to walk alone and home from a store.

When the photos of the parents are posted this thread will get interesting. I think it's questionable whether these are great parents...but I assumed there would drugs or some other origin of neglect involved (doesn't appear to be).

The accused parents remain in the custody of the Gaston County Jail with $1.5 million bonds, according to inmate records.

They didn't even let the parents go to the funeral.

The police's preliminary investigation determined that the child was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk with another young boy, age 10, when he entered the roadway and was hit, the department said. The boy was taken to a medical center with life-threatening injuries and later transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead around 10:00 p.m., according to police.

Sameule Jenkins and Jessica Ivey allegedly decided to let their sons, ages 7 and 10, walk home from the grocery store on their own for the first time on Tuesday.

West Hudson is a busy major 4 lane road, not a quiet neighborhood street.

Were the parents high as a kite and forced their kids to walk to the corner store for some smokes and a wrap?

Otherwise, wtf is going on here? Parents can’t let kids play around without 24/7 supervision?

Story can't be as cut and dry as unsupervised kids walking to and from the store.

but if it is, the Gastonia Police and the states of NC should bring the same energy when some minors murder someone.
