"we must be talking over their heads"

Democrats argue they should be trying to win back middle America by using less ‘elite, highly educated’ catchphrases

Democratic centrists are arguing again about what words the party’s representatives should use when speaking to voters.

Some Democrats say “oligarchs” instead of referring to rich people. Some say that people are “experiencing food insecurity” when they mean that they’re going hungry. Some use the word “equity” when others use “equality” or refer to “justice-involved populations” when speaking about prisoners.

Centrists argue that progressives often use language adopted by elite, highly educated people, which indicates that speakers view themselves as intelligent and virtuous while implying judgment on those who are more plainspoken. They argue that this isn’t the best way to win voters, according to The Washington Post.

“Some words are just too Ivy League-tested terms,” Democratic Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego told the paper. “I’m going to piss some people off by saying this, but ‘social equity’ — why do we say that? Why don’t we say, ‘We want you to have an even chance’?”

The 300 lb 10 year olds in American ghettos would say otherwise.

Are you actually laughing at this?

Trump "tells it like it is" I thought, speaks to the common man?

shite... these word pretzel salads were DESIGNED to divorce meaning from utterance.

What are they gonna do?

Start speaking plain truths?

Or... more reliably- they're gonna bottle that Crockett magic and start jive talking us, each and every one- all the time.

Ideological leftists can never accept that anyone can legitimately disagree with their ideas. It's always just a lack of understanding on the behalf of the poor dupes who are too stupid to welcome the infallible prescriptions of their genius leftist masters.

He tells it like it is, which is easy, because what he wants to accomplish is largely sensible to the average person.

Framing this as a linguistic issue on the left is just more of the same arrogance that got them to this point. We don't reject notions of equity because we don't understand the term, we reject notions of equity because the left has decided that equitable schooling means brown kids shouldn't be expected to do their homework or go to class, and should get As anyway.

In fairness, I think Gallego understands this issue too but he's got to operate within the confines of his cracked out party.

I have met, through my wife's profession, way too many elitist liberal snobs who look down on all Republicans for being too low IQ to know what is best for the country and have heard them say they think their base is too stupid to understand too, but glad they know Republicans are racists and bigots. It's fricking crazy.

FYI, she's a lawyer and we go to a conference every year where I meet some absolutely nutty lawyers.

I mean I'd strike sensible and replace it with understandable. I can understand what he wants to do. Do I think it's sensible? No.

Mr. "Best Words" surely has communicated and connected with a certain segment of the population...

I see it as self reflection. Democrats historical base was working class folks, and Gallego is trying to figure out ways to reach out to those folks without alienating them.

While they are taking a break to look around while perched atop their high horse, perhaps they can consider stopping changing the definitions of words to fit whatever dip shite narrative they are trying to force down everyone’s throats.

Long winded response to they think people are stupid. Which is where they were when they started the process. Nothing has changed, they'll continue to get massacred at the voting booth and hopefully they will dismantle by 2030.

Liberals might be the dumbest forms of life in the country at this point.

Only if you're retarded.

Equity, in the leftist paradigm, has NEVER meant "even chance". We have a term that has long served well for that idea and it is "equal opportunity".

They think equal opportunity is racist, so they drummed up this "equity" bullshite. Equity is UNEVEN chance in order to achieve a more equal OUTCOME.

This Gallegos cat damnwell knows it, too. He's just "aw shucks"ing this to look moderate..

It's all just a long-winded roundabout way to say we have to lie about who we really are and what we really want in order to have any possibility of winning elections on the national scale.

Except for this:

quote:

elite, highly educated

There is nothing “elite” about calling prisoners justice-involved populations. Everyone knows exactly what they are talking about. You can make a conversation as long winded as you want without gaining anything of value.

We didn’t have to dumb down “ justice-involved populations” to prisoner. They wanted to spruce up prisoner to justice involved population to gain a sense of superiority, as it is not what everyone uses.

So yes, they should stop pointlessly over describing everything. But they should be honest about why rather than make it about superiority again, like they need to “dumb it down.” It’s because it’s retarded, and people roll their eyes at it.

I can call cows a “grass fed farming involved non human populations,” or I can just call it a fricking cow.
I am no more educated than I was 30 seconds ago before I made up grass fed farming involved non human populations by the way.
