Stands to reason that as he lined up a few key deals the pressure that would be applied to the remaining holdouts would skyrocket.

And here we are.

Good.

The EU is more protectionist than China.

He's RECOMMENDING a 50% tariff? To whom is he recommending? Isn't he the one that sets the tariff?

So what are they dumping on us? Cars that are mostly made in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina? Pissed off that Airbus builds planes in Toulouse instead of Wichita?

We aren't buying significant tech components from any of the Euros except maybe PLC stuff from Siemens.

not according to the Dems; according to them only Congress can.

12 states sued to block the imposition of tariffs by Trump.

Last night (early Fri. morning) a federal judge (Trump appointee) in FL refused to issue a TRO and transferred it to a different court (lacks authority for nationwide ruling, either way?)

Trump’s instability is a huge problem. I don’t want to pay a 50% sales tax on anything made in Europe so that Trump can look tough.

Besides, he’s going to change it in a couple days. He has no short term memory.

As I recall (not going to look it up again), there are two specific times that the President can constitutionally impose tariffs. I think one is a state of emergency and the other is some finding by the Secretary of Commerce. I assume the Trump Administration has already taken care of that.

Bottom line: is the President just THREATENING the tariffs or saying they will go into effect on June 1? I know...Art of the Deal and all that.....

This seems like a shot at pharmaceuticals. The US is the top importer of EU-made drugs.

There's a law from the 70's (Carter era?) that gives the executive the right to impose tariffs as long as it is not strictly for revenue purposes.

That's why the handwringing here on this board (and elsewhere) about "he's all over the place with his reasoning" was laughable.

Fentanyl, protectionism, trade imbalance, etc. are all reasons other than revenue to get pass the hurdles for this law.

I don't think anyone who was handwringing over the tariffs thought they were illegally imposed. The complaint that he's all over the place was valid, and still is. Countries we don't have a deficit with are being tariffed, and a trade deficit is a stupid thing to base your tariffs on anyway.

Thanks. So, if it's the President's call, why do you think he is "recommending" anything?
