In 1946, the library of Harvard Law School purchased a tattered document for $27.50. Records described it as a “rubbed and damp-stained” copy of the Magna Carta, Britain’s 1215 charter that limited the monarch’s authority and protected individual rights.

Now, scholars have discovered that this “copy”—known as “HLS MS 172”—is actually a rare version of the Magna Carta reissued by Edward I in 1300. According to a statement from Harvard Law School, the newly identified document is one of only seven known surviving copies of this reissue.
Magna Carta was released in 1225 and then reissued on several occasions. Edward’s 1300 reissue was the “last time that a king of England actually confirmed the 1225 Magna Carta,”

I wouldn’t have paid more than $3.50

The "Claudine Gay" signature at the bottom is slightly concerning, but she says she was there so...

Harvard buys it on the cheap and then Harvard claims it’s an original. Nothing curious about that.
Meanwhile, I just certified the piece of gum I bought at the store was chewed by Jesus.

They should sell it and discount some tuitions instead of suckling more taxpayer dollars via student loans

The Magna Carta is an amazing document that predates the Constitution by 500 years. It has been the basis of governments all across the world.
There is a 1297 reissue on display at the National Archives in DC and people walk right by it like it is an issue of MAD Magazine.

If you think for a moment they had no idea that was real, you’re kidding yourself.
If they had claimed it was authentic from the get-go, that person probably never would’ve let it go.

It's one of those things that makes you wonder if time travel is real because it seems like there's no way anyone back then could have been so enlightened. Kind of like Leonardo and his ideas for flying machines.

Well, it only applied to the nobility. The peasants were still left out of it. And it fell apart pretty quickly leading to a civil war, if I remember my history correctly.

Harvard Law School bought it from Sotheby's back in the 1940s. They presumed it was a copy and not an original until some medieval scholars in England thought otherwise. Technology helped give strong evidence the document was an original.
I find nothing curious about this at all. It was stored away and thought to be a copy until ultraviolet scanning helped to authenticate it. It's similar to what art museums are doing with paintings from famous artists.

Yeah, it's kind of a cool story, tbh.
It was sold and bought with the understanding it was a copy.
Except it ain't.

Such lazy “thinking,” if one could even attribute the term to this.

And to think, it only took them 80 yrs to reveal their cunning.
