Has anyone heard about Ivermectin resistance in our area?

I recently got a new puppy, and after talking with my veterinarian, she mentioned something interesting — she’s been seeing cases where dogs are becoming resistant to ivermectin, meaning it’s not as effective against heartworms anymore. I started my puppy on the ivermectin tablets (for dogs up to 25 lbs) the day I got her, but my vet recommended switching to either Interceptor or the ProHeart injectable once she’s old enough. She also suggested using NexGard Plus for heartworm, flea and tick protection. She wasn’t trying to push any specific products — just giving me her honest recommendation.

Has anyone else heard about or seen this happening around here? She said it’s been more common in the Mississippi and Louisiana region.

Edited to add ...

I usually give my dogs Bravecto for flea and tick prevention—it’s a one-time dose every three months and it seems to work really well. This is alongside the monthly ivermectin I give for heartworm. For those of you using NexGard Plus, have you noticed any adverse reactions or side effects with your dogs?

It's not the Ivermectin they are resistive too, it's the amount they are allowing for "recommended dosage". Making it weaker and weaker

The democrats have started engineering our pets to be resistant to ivermectin post covid. Same class of people who are trying to turn the frogs and our daughters into lesbians. Not good!

If it’s ok, I’ll blame Fauci.

bullshite

1/10cc per 10 lbs once a month will have any dog living till something other than heartworms kill it

Ask her if she's vaccinated.

Interesting. I didn't realize this. I buy my dog medicine overseas, and the recommended dosage for up to 25 lbs. is 68 ug, which is 1 tablet (.068 milligrams).

This is somewhat true. The doses in commercial dog products are very very low.

I just give 0.05ml of 1% per 10 lbs once a month. The “baw recommended” dose is 0.1 ml per 10 lbs, but I have German shepherds, and 0.05 ml per 10 lbs is already orders of magnitude more than the commercial products.

Holy shite…I have taken about “half a horse” monthly for the past 5 years…I don’t know if my intestinal tract can take much more…

Nexgard put my 13 year old lab mix into liver failure...I would be very careful with it....I kept telling the vet she wasn't doing well with it and thats whi I had quit giving to her ....and he said it wasn't the meds....I restarted it and it was the meds, and it killed her 2 weeks later.

I am sorry to hear this. That is terrible news. I may look more into the Proheart injectable and stick with Bravecto 1 x every 3 months for flea and tick prevention.

I use NexGuard. I give it to two Labs. Both about 20 months old. No issues at all.

Every vet I’ve been to recommends it

How much more money do vets make off the other drugs? I would assume profit has something to do with the efficacy of ivermectin.

Of course not. She was telling you the one you are using isn't working in this area and suggested specifically NexGard Plus.

Honestly, I don't know anything about this one way or the other, but they all have a preferred type they recommend you use.
