La Legislature Trying to Destroy the Ethics Board

Anyone paying attention to this? Apparently our elected officials feel like they’re being harassed too much.
HB 674 By Rep. Beau Beaullieu would require a two thirds vote BEFORE an investigation could be launched & sets limits on the boards ability to gather information through subpoenas & sworn testimony. Also changes when officials can accept privately paid travel & the amount they can accept in gifts.
PASSED through the House with 0 nays and no debate.
HB 160 By Kellee Dickerson would eliminate the anonymity of the complainant and requires complaints be filed in person with the Board at their office in Baton Rouge. The bill was referred to Committee, but not debated or voted on yet.
All of this comes a year after the legislature gave Jeff full control over the makeup of Ethics board, despite facing ethics charges himself.
I would love to hear from our legislators how this benefits the citizens of this state.

JFC.
That's disgusting on a whole lot of levels.

The ethics board has been largely toothless for a while, this is just kicking a dead horse.
But...
Combine this with Jeff's recent attempts to move back towards a spoils system (removing classified status from many state employee positions) and it starts looking like Jeff has dreams of being the next Huey P (in power, if not popularity).
Pay close attention if he starts talking about removing term limits on being Governor.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely

the Legislature is doing it because of the threats from Landry. He has threatened cuts in their districts and being stripped of leadership and other roles. Baby Napoleandry is doing all of this.

Thanks, Gov. Landry!
Really, thanks you fricking idiots who voted for this clown.

HB 674 is a objectively bad and corrupt bill that will let legislators and government employees pass off the bill to the State even more than currently.
It also allows public servants to accept up to $200 per year in gifts.
It expands the definition of reasonable transportation for job duties to apply to anywhere in the US, not just in-state. Also allows "reasonable transportation" to give a speech anywhere in North America.
"Hey Rep. John, interested in going to speak at that convention in Cancun and having the State pick up the tab?"

I've already emailed my rep. I'll run against him myself next election if I need to. This is unacceptable and inexcusable.
Drafting a message to my senator now.

Can’t say I give a sh!t. look at the level of corruption in this State, not like the Ethics Board accomplished anything.

There's absolutely no reason for any of this. None.

Is that just elected officials or does that include employees as well? Do those gifts still have to be branded?

Why does the governor have a say in who is on what committee?

I overlooked these little additions…
Must have something to do with
Governor wants to allow Louisiana Racing Commission director to own racehorses
This one is very specific, obviously written for someone in mind.
quote:
Proposed law authorizes a member or the executive director of the La. Racing Commission to own a racehorse which participates in any race meeting licensed by the commission or a horse that sired or bred a racehorse that participates in a race meeting licensed by the commission, or to participate in a breeder or stallion award.

Present law (R.S. 42:1121) provides that a former member of a board or commission shall not, for a period of two years following the termination of his public service on such board or commission, contract with, be employed in any capacity by, or be appointed to any position by that board or commission.
Proposed law retains present law except to provide that a former commissioner of the Ernest N. Morial - New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority with at least 30 years of work experience in hospitality or hotel management serving as a commissioner as of Jan. 1, 2025, may be employed by the authority regardless of when his public service terminated upon a finding by the board of commissioners of the authority that circumstances require such action. Proposed law exception terminates on Dec. 31, 2025.

This is Louisiana we're talking about. There haven't been ethics in Baton Rouge since....ever.
