Ole HogNose!
I haven't seen one in years. Generally, when you scare them, they will roll over and play dead.
Picked up many of them as kid thinking they were dead, brought them inside to show parents (not the smartest idea), only when i got back to where i left the snake (when going to grab parents) the snake would be gone (many a time in the house). Side note: my mother is to this day horrified of snakes.
Tl;dr: hognose, non-venomous, good to have around house

It would be a lot better if non-poisonous snakes had a very distinctive mark or something like that. I don't have time to stare at a snake to determine if it's about to kill me or not. Too many non-poisonous snakes look like poisonous ones.

Looks like he recently ate too. Probably a small mouse in his belly

you're 100% right, not dangerous to anyone at all, but they do indeed have venom. its pretty neat. they are rear fang snakes. so their fangs are in the back of their mouths and they kinda chew their venom in. its pretty weak so unless your a frog or small mouse, no problems. Hence the whole playing dead thing instead of biting usually.

In some cases this is true, but for the most part it's pretty easy to tell a venomous snake from a non-venomous snake. One thing about them is most venomous snakes just look mean (i wouldn't base my identification on just that, just like the shape of the head can be very misleading, but its a start). Take a cottonmouth and a water snake for example, and there is just something about the cottonmouth that says "hey i'm an a-hole, stay away".
Just to give an example of what I'm talking about top photo is a banded water snake, bottom is a cottonmouth

Can't get poisoned if you don't eat them.

These things are big weenies and will flip over to show you their belly if you aggravate them

It's hognose. Mess with it and it will turn over and play dead. Is it still alive?
