Gladiator II might be the worst movie I've ever watched.

Finally got around to watching Gladiator II. I actually wanted to see this in theatres just because I loved the first so much but missed it and have just been putting off watching it on streaming. I hadn't seen any reviews or looked at discussions on here about it so I just assumed it was at least decent.

My God, what a giant turd. I mean it was legit more of a comedy than it was a drama. A few of my favorite comedy moments...

The CGI Why was the CGI so bad? The original Gladiator had better visuals and it was 20(?) years ago. The steroid enhanced baboons being a highlight. Figured that had to be the worst CGI moment possible, but man I was in for a surprise. Then comes the Sharknadiator scene. One of the bigger WTF moments I can ever recall in a serious movie. There was just so much wronf with this scene:

How is the water holding in the arena? How do you get massive ships inside the arena? How are the Gladiators just hanging out in the locker rooms and the locker rooms not be completely flooded with water? Sharks? Really?

Googling about this scene and seeing Ridley Scott's reasoning on it was pretty great...

quote:

“Dude, if you can build a Colosseum you can flood it with f***ing water. Are you joking? And to get a couple of sharks in a net from the sea? Are you kidding? Of course they can!”

"Hell yea If you can build something you can make literally anything happen" That's not really the best reasoning Ridley.

Don't get me started on the two emperors. Felt like I was watching a Gladiator SNL skit. The kid addicted to porn from White Lotus Season One putting in an all time bad performance.

I'm fairly selective in what I watch so I don't see a lot of bad movies. But I'm trying to think of a worse movie I've seen and at least in recent memory and nothing is coming to mind.

I liked it. I watched it on a plane though so that may have been a factor.

Dune 2 sucked worse than the first one.

I definitely agree that the whole flooding the Colosseum and putting some ferocious sharks in the middle was the stupidest piece of moviemaking I’ve ever seen in my life (for what was supposed to be a very serious film)

It was awful. Writing and acting was terribly corny, I hated the lead and Denzel.

I am not sure what you are getting at with the flooding of the Colosseum? It is widley believed to have happened for mock naval battles on at least 1 occasion. He did not pull the concept out of thin air. I mean I am sure it was made more grandiose on film for entertainment purposes, but it sounds like you are saying that he threw it in there with no basis whatsoever

Well they did flood the Colosseum for naval battle games.

The sharks were likely an exaggeration but who knows.

This is one of the more bizarre historical inaccuracies I've heard of and I feel like more people should be talking about it.

ETA: The sharks only eat one guy in the entire scene who was probably going to die anyway. I just don't get it

The problem is the first movie showed the floor of the Colosseum being a platform, not solid. So all that water would have flooded everything down below. Now, could they have filled it in? Maybe.

Yes I read about the one naval reenactment they know about and it was 100% nothing even remotely like what was put on screen. It wasn't at the main coliseum, likely had very little water in it and were likely tiny flat bottom "ships". It certainly didn't have sharks in it. Also we know the construction of the coliseum in Gladiator which would make it impossible. The Screen Rant article trying to justify the scene was laughable and every part of it was a major stretch. And he did throw it in there with no basis, I quoted Ridley Scott on his justification and it was completely BS.

There are certainly historical suggestions that a mock naval battle took place in the colosseum. Whether or not they actually did is a matter of believing the sources i suppose

I am not saying that what happened in the movie is anything close to what may have happened or that it is even feasible, they obviously exagerrated for pure entertainment and took some major creative licensing. I am only stating that there is a basis for the idea

I turned it off about half way through. Haven't bothered to finish it.

Yeah; that sounds like the kind of thing you'd expect to see in something like Sharknado.

Yea I mean I wasn't questioning that. I was simply stating how bad the CGI was, how dumb the sharks were, how stupid the massive ships were, and that it would have completely flooded given the structure of the building. All of those things are true.

They clearly eat several dudes who were shot and fell into the water in the very clip you posted.

But yes, that was a completely stupid scene anyway.

But they actually did flood the Colosseum and have naval battle reenactments though. That part is historically accurate. Just not sure they went through the trouble to drag sharks all the way there...and even if they did the sharks wouldn't act like they did in the movie.

But that was way less stupid than the dude standing on top of a rhino.

And even that scene was way less stupid than the killer babboon scene.

I actually liked the plot of this movie and just felt like it was horribly executed. I didn't hate that I watched it, but it just wasn't very good at all. And it failed to meet the pretty low bar I had for it going in.

I am not defensinf the movie as good but we know for a historical fact that they flooded the collisium and held naval battles. That wasn't something made up by hollywood.

I've seen some compelling docs about how they flooded the colosseum to re-create naval battles, but sharks is pretty fricking ridiculous lol.

Assuming Romans even knew what a shark was, how the frick would you catch one and keep it alive for the entire trek back to Rome?

I watched a few previews and had zero desire to make the effort to go to the theater. Pretty impressive for a sequel to one of the most liked movies of all time.

It looked completely over the top. Felt like the first time I saw the CGI tiger on the walking dead.

They did have naval battles in the Colosseum back then but the sharks were comical.
