Anyone ever get to a point where they fundamentally can’t take in new information?

I’ve been looking at something that’s very involved for so long that I’m at the point where I can’t understand it any longer and everything to do with the subject, whether I take notes or a hundred other things to review the material won’t work. It’s all a fricking blob

You have to take a brake for a bit and disassociate yourself with those thoughts completely then revisit.

I just forget unimportant stuff to make room.

Names, birthdays, anniversaries...stuff like that.

Take a few days off, man. Clear your head. Go for a walk in the woods, get outside. Work in the yard and get dirty and sweaty. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep.

6 minutes on the fries. It’s not that hard. Make room if you need to.

What if you are going to struggle to disassociate for long enough to clear your head?

So several things to that.

1: you are tired. Find the time to get some extra sleep. It’s causing you to be more stressed.

2: you are gonna have to break the monotony. Do something different than the usual. The rut is wearing on you.

3: find some sort of really great stress reliever that will just make you smile. Whatever you can think of that you enjoy that just helps let you go.

someone to help you digest the material. I do suggest some time off first and then back at it with the help you've enlisted to digest the information. You need help-ask for it.

Is it life or death?

Your brain is clearly telling you to take a brake.

I know exactly what you are saying. I’ve looked at stuff so much I’ve convinced myself of the opposite by the time I was done and guess what? I was wrong.

Looking at it the next day after I slept and just forgot about it I felt like a moron when I revisited.

I’m always on. It sucks but I’ve never turned it off in 26 years.

I’ve never set an out of office email or changed my voicemail to say I’m out of office.

Lots of good advice here.

Disengage for a bit. Do something off-topic to reset your mind, like listening to your favorite comedian or something.

And don't forget to jack off.

Yes sir, everyone does that. I’ve seen a very high powered attorney from Dallas get overloaded with info and just shut down. It was the night before a $55MM trial and the lead attorney is useless.

There’s a Chinese proverb

When the mind is tired, work the body. When the body is tired, work the mind.

I have found it helpful to go to the gym or run.

I mean go and work yourself until you think you are gonna die. Or just run forever. (Circles are good because you gotta get home.) You sleep like a rock and you prob add like an extra 9 seconds to your life or something. I usually leave the phone or only use it for time between sets or a run time. Nothing that makes me think. Just be.

I’ve found this helpful.

I’ve also tried getting blackout knockdown fubared. This is sadly not as helpful. It is more fun though.

Something similar to this happened to me last week.

Company flew me up to New York to help transition a firm we are acquiring. It wasn’t going well.

Worked through the full day without eating. At 200 mph, nonstop. I figured out a solution towards the end of the day and worked until 3:30am getting it done. Hell yeah. Got a couple hours of sleep. Next day brings on more issues to grind over.

When I got back to my hotel I could barely process words. I’d fixate on the simplest word and convince myself it couldn’t be a real word because it looked like a jumbled mess I’d NEVER seen and would never be put together in that order.

A good night’s sleep fixed me right up.
