Family of 5 and we typically go direct so we do not have to worry about switching planes. Since there are no direct flights from MSY to Glacier we are looking at the flights below and want to see thoughts on making the flights

MSY - Kalispell with layover in Dallas Both there and back have similar timing.

5:25am - New Orleans
1h 41m flight
7:06am - Dallas
Layover: 1h 4m in Dallas
8:10am - Dallas
3h 44m flight
10:54am - Kalispell

We looked at Denver but that's only a 50 minute window!

We like leaving early so there are not a ton of choices.

Renting a VRBO in Whitefish Ski Village

We made our 1st trip to Estes Park/Breckenridge last summer and loved it. This looked like a similar type trip so we picked the resort with all of the trails right out the door to go walking and exploring.

I have no clue on what you are asking about flights but mid June is early to go to Glacier. The road might not be all the way open and I’d expect most of the good hikes to have substantial snow and mud to the point that you can’t do them.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park typically opens in late June, but the exact date varies each year based on snow conditions. Plowing begins in early April, but the alpine sections of the road often remain closed until late June or even early July.

Get some spikes. Son and I conquered Estes last May with them. They are cheap on Amazon.

Would mid-end July be a better time to go?

Yes, way better. I went in mid July last year and we had to traverse some really sketchy snow parts getting to Gunsight pass. I wouldn't have done those parts with my kids.

We live in Colorado and have spikes, this isn't that type of party. It is ice axe for fall arrest type stuff. Most of the trails will be like this in June.

Yes. There have been years where Going-To-The-Sun road isn't fully open until after July 4th.

Going to the Sun road is spectacular...and if you can swing it, go when it is open.

However, if your schedule is open in June...go in June. There are plenty of places/hikes in the park that are beautiful that will be open and accessible.

Poster is right that you may not have access to certain areas in June. However, crowds may be smaller and you should still be able to do and see a lot in June if that’s the best time for your family

Do you think the trails around the ski resort would be walkable in June?

We are not extreme hikers, just like to go out for some light trail walks!

We did that it was perfect. Close to so much yet relaxed and secluded. Incredible trip. One of the few parks I would rather go back to than see one on my bucket list.

Might suggest, if you have the time to take a day and go to Polebridge / Bowman Lake area. Not real easy to get to, but a great way to spend a day away from the big crowds . Kids will love a huckleberry bear claw from Polebridge Mercantile especially if you play it up for a few days. Have fun.

I think shoulder season is the best time to visit. I went last year two days after Labor Day for a week and the weather was perfect and the crowds (families) had pretty much cleared out.

So we locked in July 6-11 at Whitefish Resort

Looking at things to do...and we have never been to Canada, would it be worth the 2-3 hour drive for a few hours in Canada and see a few sights, towns, mountains etc...Looks like we can get to a few small Canadian towns or see a few lakes/trails.

I have never driven across a border before so not sure how that works and if its worth dealing with for a little while in Canada

Thinking about the quick trip into Canada on Tuesday if we do it.

Other than passports would we need anything to take our rental car on a one day adventure?!
