This is just a rant and it’ll probably piss off people because many users on here live in Texas, but I’ve never understood the hype for it and why so many people want to live there. And before anyone goes, “but you’re from Ohio” well yeah no shite, I know that Ohio isn’t a great a place to live. But people in Texas have this sense of arrogance when it comes to flaunting their state as a paradise when in reality it isn’t.
There’s very little scenery in the state outside of the hill country. The climate is absolute dogshit in the summer. The beaches in Galveston are trash. Dallas, Austin, and Houston are basically sprawled out, decentralized cities full of corporate chain restaurants where there is no walkability at all and you have to drive 15-20 minutes just to get to places. All three of those cities feel like they were taken and artificially transplanted in farm country. They have no organic feel at all.
The property taxes are insane yet the infrastructure and roads are garbage. At least in cities like San Francisco, Boston, and NYC, a significant portion of the taxes go towards good things like public transit and roads. All three of those cities have an organic feel and are very walkable. The food scene in those cities are also infinitely better than anything Dallas, Houston and Austin have to offer.
And to top it all off, Texas is basically a Bible Belt haven for white evangelical Christian boomers from California who want to flee the state’s political climate. You know, the “dey terk our jerbs!” type. I’m a Catholic and I can’t stand evangelical Protestants. Absolute morons.
People are only moving to Texas for two reasons: cheap living and to make a political statement. That’s it.
Not to mention how they brag about being independent and the "lone star state", yet they've hopped on the backs of other countries throughout their existence.
Life is all about choices. If you don’t like Texas then stay away. You don’t build yourself by trying to tear others down. Texans are proud of their state. Good for them. Let it be and STFU!

The property taxes are high but you still save a lot more than paying a state income tax.
In California, if you make a couple hundred thousand a year, your marginal tax rate will be 50% of your income.
Part of the reason we are staying in Louisiana for now. The only other real reason to move would take us to Texas. And the cons of Texas far outweigh the pros.
I've lived in Texas before, it's just not that great. It's a fine state. In terms of QoL, it doesn't hold a candle to most PNW and Northeast states. It's just that a chunk of people on this board who moved to Texas have never actually lived anywhere else that wasn't mandated by a job or the military, so they only have Louisiana to compare it to.

God damn this just sold me on Texas! Glad to be here
We have been in Texas for 25 years and will never move back to Louisiana. Our home state is a great place to visit (and I do) but I wouldn’t want to live there anymore.
In Houston, you can get pretty much any type of food that exists in the world. It is a true melting pot. Also there are 146 Catholic Churches in Houston serving 1.7 million Catholics so you’re wrong about that too.

When I was in the military I found people from Ohio got the most homesick. I don’t know why they longed for the cold winters and skyline chili

Ok

LOL
Man, you are incredibly out of touch with reality if you think anything in Louisiana outweighs Texas. You either love poboys or can't live without ma-maw being down the street, or both.
