Northwestern State seeking to establish law school

Northwestern State is in the process of establishing a law school. Currently, there are only four law schools in the state, none of which are in North Louisiana. Executive Vice President and Provost Greg Handel says people in the region want a law school in North Louisiana.
“We have probably 20 or 22 letters of support from attorneys and law firms and legislative delegations really getting behind the fact that this really is needed in this part of the state,” Handel said.
The idea started picking up steam when the school hired NSU graduate and former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice James Genovese as its new president last year. Handel says there are many steps that need to happen before the university can officially launch its law school.
“We would get some approvals this summer, this fall, and we would be able to go ahead and hire a few faculty staff and a founding dean to do some recruiting, to write accreditation documents, to write that curriculum and get all of that approved,” Handel explained.
Handel says they hope to welcome the first students in the fall of 2026.
“There will be some barriers along the way, but if we do our best on the front end to submit a strong proposal, we feel those barriers are surmountable for us,” Handel said.
Really trying to build on the momentum of the LSU win.

There are four, but "only" two are public.
One in the northern part of the state is a good idea.
And I say that as someone who thinks there are too many fricking lawyers in this state.

LA probably has too many law schools as it is. I also have a hard time seeing NSU getting this off the ground from a financial standpoint.

I don't care either way, but Genovese being involved likely gets this done.

Texas has 10 law schools. The state population is 31.3 million. That means there is 1 law school per every 3.13 million people
Louisiana wants 5 law schools....for a state with 4.6 million people. That would come out to a ratio of 1 law school for every 920k people

We do not need this. Four is plenty.
This is not a big state. We do not need to apportion law schools geographically. It adds nothing to the education of the lawyer. It does not guarantee that lawyers will live near the law school they graduated from.
This should be shot down quickly.

Shut down one of the other ones and move it up north - looking at you Southern with a sub 50% bar passage rate

The last thing this state needs is another law school.
In fact, this state only needs one, maybe two at most. There are too many schools and too few jobs in the field. It has been extremely saturated for decades.
These schools are just scams that rake in student loan money and leave graduates saddled with no job and crushing debt.
Especially a toilet tier school like NSU is destined to be. I’m sure it will be plumbing the depths of the 140s in the LSAT range and will struggle to fill classrooms.
If you think starting a law school is a good idea, please look up Indiana Tech’s law school

Louisiana College tried this years ago with Royal Alexander and some other Shreveport folks. I think this is what ultimately led to Southern Law’s Shreveport “campus”.
Regardless, there are too many lawyers in this state. They should be focusing on limiting applications to qualified applicants to avoid the bloodbath that AI is about unleash on the legal profession.
