My attic gets absurdly hot in the summer due to lack of air flow. What type of trade would have the best person for this job? Roofer, carpenter?

Do you have one thats just broken or do you need it installed from scratch? If you just need to replace the motor, you could do it yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring someone. I am not a super handy person but I try to fix things when I can and this was a very doable project for me.

I need to install one from scratch. We currently don’t have any in the attic.

I would even normally try to do the install myself, but with a 2 yo and newborn at home, time is very limited to get this done before the summer heat picks up.

Fair enough. Not sure whether a roofer or general contractor would be best for you. One of the issues you might face is the job being "too small" for some contractors. Maybe a Handyman type would be best but I'd make sure they are insured.

why do you have poor airflow? attack that problem and won't need a fan.

You should compare to solar attic fans. No wiring to run. They'll do the install.

Had a buddy doing this in Plano. He took me on a job. Steep arse roofs but he got it done in less than 30 mins.

I think it’s because of the minimal amount of venting. The only places that air can flow into the attic right now are repeating locations of perforated vinyl siding in the soffit, like this: LINK.

Nothing else in the soffit or roof is allowing air to flow in. I was hoping an attic fan could pull more air in and turn over all the air in the attic regularly, as long as that perforated vinyl allows enough intake air to be pulled in.

Interesting. Thanks for the tip. I’ll look those up.

What you are looking for is a powered attic vent, not an attic fan. An attic fan moves air from the inside of your house to the attic (with the windows open) to create air flow if you don’t have AC.

Just letting you know what the proper term is to avoid confusion with any contractor you may hire.

That’s what I thought the op was talking about.

Roofer is going to be your best bet, just be sure to test the unit before you let them install. Nothing worse than finding out it doesn't work properly after the roof is sealed up.

How old are the shingles on your roof?

I had fans installed on the roof when it needed the shingles replaced. They installed the fans with wires attached but needed electrician to come and connect to the house electrical.

You need to increase soffit venting and maybe add a whirlybird or two. Without doing those and instead adding a powered fan, you will be putting your attic in a negative pressure and start sucking conditioned air from inside your home from around every light fixture and crack.

Powered attic fans are almost NEVER the right solution and in many situations, greatly increase energy usage.

I had 2 powered fans on my roof that ran on a built-in thermostat...were supposed to kick on when the temp reached a certain point. Had the roof replaced 3 years ago and the contractor got up there and told me the wiring was there but not even hooked up. Said he could hook them up when the roof was done but recommended the whirly birds, so that's what I went with.

I know he wasn't trying to upsell me because he didn't charge me for them...plus they look better than what was there.

No problem…basically the only folks that would know the difference are us oldsters that remember the days before air conditioners!
