First look images of BBC's new historical epic series: King & Conqueror

The series will tell the story of the Norman Conquest of England in the year 1066 and stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William, Duke of Normandy and James Norton as Harold Godwinson, King of England. The series will also star Clemence Posey as Matilda of Flanders and Emily Beecham as Edith the Fair.
I'm actually reading a book about the Norman Conquest right now so this is very timely for me.

The BBC description reads: "King & Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea.
"Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown."

The official Wikipedia portrait of William the conqueror is hilarious. Really this is the best we could do? I find it hilarious that perspective in art wasn’t a thing until the renaissance.

The queer king we know about…one of the Edwards…was heard screaming from the tower after he was usurped and had a red hot poker rammed up his arse. I don’t think they tolerated prideful rainbow people much back then.

Apparently they did tolerate them.
Up to a point.

It’s a picture of the Bayeux Tapestry, a famous depiction of the Norman Conquest. That particular section is of the Battle of Hastings. If you search google you will see other paintings of William, but it makes sense why the embroidery is used for the Wikipedia article.

That was Edward II about 200 years after this

The lack of diversity in those pics is pretty surprising. I’ll watch this show. I love English history

Given their appalling track record, Im genuinely surprised that they haven’t “reimagined” the hell out of this yet.

I’ll trust BBC to make a good television show more than I’ll ever trust HBO, Hulu, or Netflix. Sad but these are the times we live in now.

WTF? Both had designs on the throne.
A few years earlier William held Harold hostage and forced Harold renounce his claim to the throne before he would let Harold go.
Harold said that his renouncement wasn't valid because he was coerced.
Harold also fought Harold Hardrada of Norway for the crown.
As far as I know they were never allies.

I'm legitimately surprised it's all white people in the stills.
