Questions on teen drivers insurance

HI Folks,
My son (16) is applying for Temporary Instruction permit which is needed for drivers education course before getting the learner's permit.
Two questions:
1. When does he need to get auto insurance? Is it when he gets Temporary Instruction permit or learner's permit? Does my auto insurance company automatically knows about these permits and puts them on my policy? Mine is up for renewal soon.
2. How do I keep the auto insurance down with teen driver added? When on learners and full permit my son will be driving my 20 years old corolla. He won't be touching other cars in my household. Someone told me it is possible to keep rates low by telling the insurance company that my son won't be driver on other cars. Others told me it does not work.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

On 1 - When they get their full license.
On 2 - Get the lube ready now and prepare thy anus.

You gotta inform your insurance company that they have a permit but you won’t pay until they’re fully licensed.

Bend over, spread your cheeks really wide, and lube up like the rest of us have. Also, pray for no accidents until he’s off your insurance.

Exactly this.

Pray.
When my son was 17 we called our insurance provider and started getting pricing for him if we were to get a $15,000 vehicle. Our provider quoted $475 a month and others quoted higher, with some being $530 a month.
We finally went back to our agent and asked what else we could do and he said if we pass down another car already on our plan, that they could get much better rates.
So he got my daughter’s vehicle and I think we are at $375 for him.

My youngest is 17 so we went through this not that long ago. You don't need insurance when he just has a permit.
The best you can do is rate him on the cheapest vehicle in the house. Good luck. It's expensive as hell. My daughter's is more that my wife and I's combined.

Mine just turned 18 last year. Really considering donating the car to him and getting him his own policy. I need to price that out.

State Farm is one of the cheapest for teen drivers.
They have an app you can download, then the teen drives so many miles to get an certificate.
It's still gonna be $300 + a month for full coverage on any car.

If he has good grades, mention that when getting quotes. Most insurers offer a discount for that.

My son’s is high AF. Not even sure what to do when he goes off to college. Probably just register his car in the new state and see if he can get insurance on his own.

Raise your liability limits asap

Not all companies have permissive use, I would not recommend going this route at all as you could seriously frick yourself over come claims time.
Lots of companies have good student discount and youthful driver programs that will give discounts as long as no accidents or tickets.

You can exclude him/her on your policy. Progressive excluded our child on the proof of ins card. It was cheaper to buy him a car and get ins for him through Geico. It was 250 a month for a 17 yr old with a 5 year old accord.
