Why doesn't Louisiana produce great basketball players or coaches?

The top states producing basketball players are as follows:

1. Texas
2. California
3. Indiana
4. Illinois
5. Georgia
6. Florida
7. New York
8. North Carolina
9. Maryland
10. Tennessee

You can, of course, come up with different lists but you will never see Louisiana in any of them. Why is this?

Relatively small population, poor state that doesn't invest money in high school infrastructure, not enough good coaches at any level and most important total emphasis on football. It is almost impossible to be a great two sport star at the college level, especially if those sports are football and basketball. Tre Dez Green being the latest example. If a great athlete such as Tre Dez comes along, the emphasis is always on football. He actually enjoyed basketball more but probably got good advice that he could be a pro football player easier than a basketball one.

So our next basketball coach should not be a local product who emphasizes recruiting in state. We need someone who can get players from anywhere, including overseas.

We do. Per capita we’re up there but going strictly by volume against states with over 30 million more people than ours isn’t realistic.

Our best basketball players often become skill position players in football.
Football is king in Louisiana
We are at the top of the heap nationally in producing skill position players in football.

There are so many stupid people that were born in the 2000’s. Your list as you mentioned is not nearly all of them and these are just not average- they are all time greats.

there are only 10 players on a team so the sample size is way smaller....

Basketball is highly specialized, and only 5 at a time can play.

There are only 400 players in the NBA....

LSU has had poor scouting of the state going back several regimes.

Names like tweety Carter and lacrdarius Dunn and Robert Williams.

Joseph Tugler on Houston this season lived in Monroe through 8th grade.

That’s just off the the top of my head.

Big contributors for teams that were very good.

ETA you can even talk about guys like Jordan Wright.

You obviously haven’t done any research and don’t know LA basketball history.

So all they had to do is be born in Louisiana, and somehow that immediately gave them basketball talent. How many of those players actually developed their talent in the state of Louisiana

You might have noticed UH had at least two key players from LA.

Louisiana still produces basketball talent. I do feel like there are less players the last couple of decades coming out of more rural areas. Bernice/Summerfield area alone produced Willis Reed, Karl Malone, and Orlando Woolridge. Probably AAU ball has played a role in that decline.

Terrible take. Louisiana is #3 per capita. They just do not want to play for a program that has never been anything more than a dependable second round exit (at best).

WTF are you talking about? Are you just deflecting because you don’t like the truth? Why do so many of you people do that here?

100%, we’re not nearly involved enough in the state or regional HS scene at LSU. Anybody who watches the big tourneys around here will tell you there’s serious talent around.

Both Hayes and Drexler played all of their high school ball in Texas.
That's my point, not that we don't have raw talent but for whatever reason they don't get the training they need. Madking's list is all players from before the year 2000. How many Louisiana high school players made either high school or college All American since 2000?
