Still see a few around my kids' schools and had me wondering do most of these kids grow out of this phase? At what age? Any of you have any experience with it personally?

It’s not a phase. It’s a lifestyle.

Usually influenced by their parents. You generally don’t see a ton of country club moms with goth kids

I love classic 80s/90s goth music, horror etc. but still dress like a normal adult.

I've never really understood why people take one genre and make it their entire personality

They do it because it makes them "unique" and "non-conforming"

Wrong. Most teen rebellion is a direct opposite of their parents. I bet those kids' parents are a lot like you.

Actually, that may have been true pre-2000. Today, it seems like most parents are much more "friends" to their kids rather than parent and we are seeing much less rebellion.

Former "gutter punk" here and you generally grow out of dressing like that around the time you have to get a real job. You may continue on in your personal time for a while and get in to "uniform" to go to shows or parties or something but eventually it gets to be too much of a hassle. I still go to punk and hardcore shows and interact with the community but generally just show up in what i wore to work that day. Its funny because i used to see the old guys at shows and chuckle but now thats me.

I had sex with a emo chick once. Was hiding a crazy body under the baggy clothes. Sex was surprisingly great but she was covered in a frick ton healed cutting scars and it was a bit of a turnoff.

Well, in the transition from the 2000’s to the 2010’s, the emo kids all went in one of a couple directions:

1. Hipsters wearing flannel and suspenders or business casual clothes everywhere

2. Ravers obsessed with dubstep

3. Carhart core widwest emo fan

A lot of them circled back to millennial core fashion around Covid.

I’m sure the zoomers who brought that look back in style with tiktok will follow a similar trajectory.
