Ever knew a”Topper”? That’s someone who feels compelled to top your story.

I knew this guy at work who couldn’t listen to someone telling about something without him saying to the group “that ain’t nothing, I…… before topping their story.

I thought a topper refers to the side shot of vodka I get w a Bloody Mary

After my first long sip, I add the topper to the Bloody Mary.

Profit.

Always called that person the "one upper" and yeah I work with a woman like that.

Even if she can't really one up the story she'll find some way to make every topic about her.

I have a tendency to do this. I recognized this a long time ago so I consciously hesitate to not one-up and I make sure any stories I share after a friend tells one adds to theirs or I make sure I’m not consistently doing it.

Yep, I have a coworker like that. No matter what you say, he has a similar but worse or better story

Brian Regan does a bit on this topic with a guy who walked on the moon keeping quiet while the""Topper" tells his story before nonchalantly revealing he took a drive one day in the Sea of Tranquility on the Lunar Rover

I know a couple (or now former couple)

Still good friends, but back when they dated, it was a mayhem just having them over to hangout. He would start talking and she would interrupt loudly, then him , then her

Next thing you know they are both yelling at you, each one trying to top the others story.

Sometimes it was the SAME story!

My dad will do this. I don't think he necessarily does it intentionally or consciously, but he grew up with two brothers close in age, and my grandfather was a gruff, stoic guy who didn't give out compliments easily.

I always believed Dad developed it as a skill to get attention/approval as a kid.
