“I agree with President Trump. Maybe we should have a 51st state. I just don’t think it should be Canada,” Burton said while on the House floor.

quote:

A Missouri lawmaker called for making St. Louis, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County the 51st state during a debate last week regarding the state takeover of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police.

quote:

State Rep. Michael Burton, D-Lakeshire, suggested the city and two counties secede from the state and directed his argument at the Republican side of the chamber, stating, “We subsidize your counties.”

In the next hundred years we will probably have cities seceding from states. Illinois and Chicago residents have been talking about it for years.

If St Louis didn’t have KC and Stl tax money the state would go broke.

How would the State go broke if KC and STL expenses went away?

Stl has the 22nd largest GDP in the country and its tax dollars don’t stay in the city. St. Louis had the nation’s highest per capita personal income growth over the past 5 years and it’s the top 5 in job growth rate.

Missouri relies on 32% federal funding and the rest comes from Missouri taxes. Most of the taxes come from Stl and KC. I would say around 80% comes from the 2 metro areas. Their tax dollars are spread all over the state.

Small town in Missouri gets grants from the state for a police department paid for by the tax payers of Stl and KC.

If big cities want to secede on the merits of not wanting to subsidize rural counties, Im sure they wont mind having to pay even more for their eggs since farmers would need to charge more to make ends meet. Or commuter taxes...

Only if they take Kansas City and Columbia with them. In fact just take everything north of Interstate 70 and give it to Iowa.

So, as I understand it, if they seceded but failed to get ratified as a state they would become a US Territory and their Congressional representation would become a non-voting territorial delegation? I could be talked into this.

I'm not trying to be contrarian, (at the moment), but how did West Virginia get around this without legal recognition of Virginia's secession?

One of these thing’s isn’t like the other…St. Charles & St. Charles county would rather burn themselves to the ground than have any affiliation with the city or STL.County.

Why is the State of Mo. having to take over the STL. City Police Department and why are the rank & file officers and their Union absolutely giddy about it?

I know, everyone in the State knows, why don’t you tell this board…

Because legally and constitutionally West Virginia is bogus.

The opposite would be true. These "city-states" would quickly go broke and be begging the actual states to bail them out.

Texas has the right to divide into 5. But that’s not going to happen.

I'll go way out on a limb and say we rural folks in MO will survive without KC and St Louis leftist insanity.
