Seceding From Succession.

Good book on the creation of West Virginia. Presents arguments for why it is a state vs why it isn’t a state. Theoretically, the Virginia legislature should have voted to create West Virginia but since they succeeded from the Union, they were not viewed as the proper legislature to fulfill that duty.

St. Louis native here.

Lets start by making the distinction between the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. The two are not the same. The county divorced the city sometime in the late 1800's to avoid a city tax that was imposed on businesses. St. Louis County has its own governing body and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the city. This is why the crime statistics are so skewed. The City is a dangerous cesspool of criminality with less than 300,000 people residing there. The demographics are almost entirely poor black. The city schools have been taken over by the state. The County is largely a safe, if a bit boring, place to raise a family. The area I grew up, neighbors know each other, leave doors unlocked, attend church. The second we are given keys to the car at 16 we are taught what to do if you are driving east on 40 and see the "Last Missouri Exit" sign. (if you are from there, you know what I'm saying)

In no way would the State of Missouri suffer economic loss if the City of St. Louis were to form its own state. The rest of the country would suffer, however, as it is 100% Democrat and would enshrine two Dem senators and some in the House as well in perpetuity.

The opposite would be true. These "city-states" would quickly go broke and be begging the actual states to bail them out.

The later comment is the truth. KC and St. Louis are already broke shite holes, that have been run into the ground by corrupt governance and failed policy. They've been decaying urban centers since WW2.

The city voted to leave the county because of taxes, not the other way around.

Also, the split between white and black is about 50/50.

So was I. Like they said, stay out of the city itself and MO seems like a really, really nice place.

The Delmarva Peninsula has tried multiple times to break away from Virginia, Maryland, and Deleware to create a 51st state. Unfortunately they just didn't have the population base to make it happen.

KC used to be a nice/safe place to live...in recent years with it's Dem mayor the city's violent crime has skyrocketed.
