Recently the current US president put the value of American citizenship at $5 million and said citizens of other countries can buy a ‘gold card’ for that amount and automatically become US citizens… I want to flip that on its head a little- if offered $5 million today, in US dollars, to renounce your citizenship would you take it ? I would take it so fast ur head would spin.. then again I’ve lived in other countries and loved it.. State your answer, along with your age and anything else you’d like to add .. keep in mind you’d no longer have citizenship so would never receive SS or Medicare (if they still exist in a few years) but you could still visit friends and family back in the US on a visa for let’s say one month per year .

Turn this parking lot into a party with an ice chest and some cold beer man, we live it up down, up down, up down.

The first time I saw Lost In Translation, I thought “you know, that would be kind of cool”. But if that was just like… my entire life, I don’t know how much I’d be able to gel over there. Maybe if I could find some large ex-pat American community to assimilate into?

I think it’s probably worth a lot more to me than $5 million bucks. Plus we live in some uncertain times. I don’t think there’s anywhere safer than America if the shite really hits the fan.

I’ll pass. I have a great life and family and would not take $5M to be relegated to living in a shittier country and only allowed to visit family/friends for 1/12 of my remaining life.

I don’t know how long $5 million would last you. That’s an expensive part of the world.

I’d take it in a heartbeat. Won’t need social security and US has one of the worst healthcare systems among modernized countries.

I’d take it, go somewhere with a really low COLA, live off of a tiny fraction of it, invest the rest, and buy my citizenship back in a few years later.

I know most would take it and it’s probably a no-brainer. But for better or for worse, I’m an American and I plan to stay that way.

If I took the $5M could I apply for a visa (ultimately green card) with the US? Because that's what I'd do. Or Canada, who I believe has easier immigration rules if you have money.

Yep, in a heartbeat. I have traveled enough to know that that kind of money can secure my life on an amazing beach, I have seen many that put the redneck riviera to shame.
