Pierce finally fulfilling his destiny as Rice coach. If he can’t bring things back it may be gone mate

I’m surprised they actually made a move, and a mid season move at that.

He has the best resume of potential candidates.

It still blows my mind how far that program has fallen. When I was was in college they were an absolute monster. I never envisioned a world where they couldn’t compete

The AD since fired didn't want to give Graham the time he wanted a Pierce was tired of waiting

Meanwhile other programs started putting $$ into baseball, and Rice maintained the academic requirement

those days are gone,,

So what is the new ceiling? Competing for conference championships and maybe a regional every now and then?

Yes, I think if you’re Rice you want to be one of those G5 teams in the back end of the top 25 fighting for a host spot in your best years

If Pierce gets hired and does well I could see him staying there for a bit since he’s had a taste of a major job already and this was a dream job of sorts at one point for him

Pierce is on his way back down, that almost never works out. Hallmark is on the way up.

A 90 year old Wayne Graham was still better than the 2 coaches they’ve had since.

Isn’t he already on the coaching staff? Who’s going to be the interim?

The game has changed. Rice's won it all in 2003, and their last appearance was something like '06 or '08.

Over the past 20 years, the big boys have started dumping more and more money and resources into baseball. Just makes it tough for a program like Rice to continue to push into even consistent Super Regional appearances.

How did Rice ever get so good in the first place?

Isn’t it hard for private schools since not all baseball players get full rides and it cost a lot more to pay the difference at a private school?

Wayne Graham

He was super-successful at San Jacinto JC and basically supplemented rosters at Rice with JC talent in addition to treating Houston as a large enough recruiting ground to focus almost exclusively on local high schools. The timing worked perfectly for them to move from a tough SWC to a much easier CUSA as well.

The recent downturn is mostly due to hanging on to Coach Graham for too long unfortunately. Even still the breakup was bad when it finally did happen. The last few classes of freshmen he recruited supposedly had basically zero contact with him until they were signed and on-campus.

With the way NIL has completely changed the scholarship game, I don’t see Rice bouncing back to a championship level any time soon even with a strong hire.
