Only the 1% of the 1% should have a problem with this. What do you say Bernie?

People are going to criticize him for saying the US has a Champaign business. Guarantee it.

TRADE WAR!

The EU exported €503 billion of goods to the US market, while importing €347 billion; this resulted in a goods trade surplus of €157 billion for the EU.

The US DOES make Champagne. The agreement between the EU and US is that US wineries making “Champagne” before 2005 can continue to do so, but there shall be no new ones unless they are doing it with grapes from Champagne.

Serious question, when Trump says reciprocal tariffs, I assumed that meant percentage. So 50% on US whisky would mean 50% on EU alcohol.

Since Trump is going 200% on EU alcohol, does reciprocity mean tariff dollars?

Or is Trump, like the majority of us, tired of the BS and fighting back and being the bully that we need to put an end to the unfair tariff imbalance?

Reciprocal tariffs means equal tariffs ie the tariffs Trump is imposing.

Retaliatory tariffs means as punishment ie the tariffs weak countries impose in retaliation to equal tariffs. Trump may then impose harsher retaliatory tariffs and the sky screaming grows louder.

The European wine industry is a great target for Trump.

1-American grapes are not being harvested because of international competition.
2-International competition is primarily coming from non European areas is South America, Australia, Africa, etc.
3-American and non European wine makers can easily replace 100% of EU quality and quantity of wines.

Still wine imports December 2024, in US Dollars:

EU nations
Austria 1,991,493
Belgium 96,097
Bulgaria 134,913
Croatia 163,837
Cyprus 12,075
Czech Republic 41,160
Denmark 425,193
Estonia 0
Finland 0
France 113,112,628
Germany 5,848,078
Greece 769,000
Hungary 257,965
Ireland 0
Italy 109,196,974
Latvia 0
Lithuania 139,197
Luxembourg 148,162
Malta 0
Netherlands 77,242
Poland 0
Portugal 4,443,796
Romania 32,266
Slovakia 16,623
Slovenia 205,919
Spain 15,025,590
Sweden 0

Non Eu nations over 10 million dollars
ARGENTINA 13,469,709
AUSTRALIA 14,881,850
CHILE 13,493,896
NEW ZEALAND 41,757,527

Other wines are similar.

Notice the big producers France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. France, Italy, and Germany are EU power houses, and Portugal and Spain are weaklings that will be disproportionately effected! This is effectively targeting their “blue states”!

And let’s think about beer.
EU over 1 million dollars in December 2025:
BELGIUM 2,776,887
GERMANY 5,217,025
IRELAND 15,030,067
ITALY 2,965,529
NETHERLANDS 40,399,423

American whiskey exports to the EU $699 million in 2024.

The U.S. imports more than $6.7 billion worth of wine a year, per the American Association of Wine Economists, with about two-thirds of that coming from France and Italy.

Beer harder to find. America imported $67 billion in 2022, with the Dutch accounting for 8.9%.

That would be about 90 million and the rest above 50 million or $140 million minimum.

As someone who lives in one wine region and just came back from another wine region, I don’t believe this to be true whatsoever.

Our wineries do use some EU grapes in their blends but that’s because different climates produce different flavors of grapes. They aren’t going to alter the recipe from one year to the next based upon grape pricing. They need consistency.
