These were Lange's numbers; pretty impressive for a true Fr:

Started 17 games on the mound, posting a 12-0 mark and a 1.97 ERA in 114 innings with 46 walks and 131 strikeouts … limited opponents to a .212 batting average and allowed only three homers … 6-0 in SEC regular-season games with a 2.33 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 58 innings

That's impressive for a 5th year senior much less a freshman

Aaron Nola was awesome too. Didn't he only have like 7 walks the whole year?
Posted on 3/7/25 at 12:37 pm to Mattgobear
Nola was good as a freshman just had a few more games where he got knocked around a good bit

Yeah seemed like from May - Postseason he really found his best groove.

Not sure, but nobody finished their freshman year any better than Brett Laxton
“Well, it was pretty exciting for me," said LSU coach Skip Bertman, after watching Laxton strike out a championship-game record 16 batters to lead the Tigers to an 8-0 victory and their second national title in three years. "Brett's performance was one of the greatest I've ever seen here. And it was exciting."
“Displaying the composure of a seasoned upperclassman, not to mention a deadly slider and a 90-mph fastball. Laxton pitched a three-hitter against a Wichita State team that had scored 21 runs in winning its three previous World Series games. His complete game was the first in a title game since 1961. Along the way Laxton fanned every Shocker in the lineup at least once and didn't allow a base runner past second.
"He came with a fastball all day and pretty much stuck it to us," said Wichita State relief ace-DH Darren Dreifort, who got one of the three hits off Laxton but gave up two of the Tigers' runs.
Laxton, who retired the last eight Wichita State batters (four on strikeouts), said the drama of the week before had kept him from easing up once the Tigers had built their big early lead“

Matty Ott is for sure up there especially for how he performed in the post season

If Schmidt (or any of our freshman pitchers) could put up numbers similar to that, I'd have no doubt we'd be in the CWS this year.
Those numbers are very impressive. Even moreso considering he did that as a true freshman.

I miss that CWS strike zone

I could be wrong, but I think Nola was like 7-4 with a 3.5-4.0 ERA as a freshman.
Good but not elite.
He excelled the next two years.

What makes that really impressive was that was the first season we went to flat-seam baseballs as well (2015) which carried a bit further than the balls before them.

Can't say it was the best freshman season, but Zach Hess was really fun to watch after we moved him to the pen and let him close out games

Dude was dominant in the NC game with a 90 mph fastball. This is how much the game has changed.

Didn't Poche have a big freshman year?
Posted on 3/7/25 at 2:16 pm to Jim Hopper
By the numbers:
• Wins: Lange/Laxton (12), Mestepey (11).
• ERA: Lange (1.97), Laxton (2.96), Mestepey (3.75).
• Strikeouts: Lange (131), Laxton (108), Mestepey (79).
• Innings: Mestepey (139.1), Lange (114), Laxton (100.1).
• WHIP: Lange (1.17), Laxton (1.24), Mestepey (1.40).
Breaking it down:
• Lange dominates with an untouchable 1.97 ERA, a perfect 12-0 record, and 131 strikeouts—highest among the trio. His WHIP (1.17) and opponent average (.216) reflect his ability to stifle hitters. While he didn’t win a title, his CWS run and national award cement his case.
• Laxton matches Lange’s 12 wins (with one loss) and adds a CWS championship, a rare feat for a freshman starter. His 2.96 ERA and 108 Ks are strong, though less elite than Lange’s, and his 100.1 innings show he was a workhorse for his time.
• Mestepey leads in durability with 139.1 innings—25+ more than Lange—and a solid 11-3 record. His 3.75 ERA and 79 Ks are less dazzling, but his postseason grit (10 IP in a Super Regional) and SEC-leading stats highlight his impact.
Verdict: It’s tight, but Alex Lange likely edges out as LSU’s best freshman pitcher all-time. His sub-2.00 ERA, undefeated record, and strikeout prowess, paired with the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year nod, give him a slight advantage. Laxton’s CWS title is a massive point in his favor, but his higher ERA and fewer innings tip the scales. Mestepey’s innings total is impressive, yet his stats don’t match the dominance of the other two. If you prioritize championships over raw numbers, Laxton could take it.
• Brett Laxton (1993): 12-1, 2.96 ERA, 100.1 IP, 108 K, 41 BB, 1.24 WHIP, .223 opp. AVG.
