It's about standing up to Russia finally after their repeated aggression started in 2008.
In this specific instance, this conflict started in late 2013 by Russia (directly or indirectly) thwarting EU integration of Ukraine. That matters to the EU.
You can disagree with it as a policy of the US and that's fine, but that's the answer to your question.
