What a great movie….the dialogue between Russel Crowe’s character and Paul Bethany’s character are classic in every scene.

21 books. Too bad it didn't do better at the box-office.

I know it wont have Crowe in it (which is a damn shame) but someone could really make a good series off this material .

This is one you absolutely MUST see with full high quality surround sound. It might be the best sound track (not meaning music) ever put on film. It’s a masterpiece

I've read through the whole series 4 times, and some of the books (like Mauritius Command) at least 8 times. Fantastic series.

They actually made a rig with sails and drove it at high speed and recorded if for the movie. They put a lot of effort into recording actual sounds of sailing ships (creaking of wood, the waves, the foot falls of the crew, ships bell, etc) and used them in the movie. It's one reason the movie feels so authentic.

On the other hand they used a motor on the ship, and there is at least one scene where the ship is sailing at speed while there is no wind in the sails. I had not noticed until someone pointed it out.

Very well done books. Subtly hilarious. Although I had to look up more terms and foreign language quotes than any other series I have read.

Probably the answer to "what is a very high quality movie universally loved by men and hated by their wives"

Made my wife watch it, she loved the cast, but...

When I asked why it wasn't one of the most popular movies ever she said, "Probably because there's not a single woman in it."

The only female in the film was the lady on the island where the sailors were trading goods…she was making eyes at the captain.

One of the best movies of the 2000's. I've only read one of the books, but as others have said, it could be a good series.

Of course, they'd have to hire a bunch of white guys.

Knew it was based on a novel but had no idea there were that many of them. Is the movie based on the first or a few of them? How are the books? Always looking for a new read.
