I’m not particularly into metal/thrash metal music, but I see they’re playing Chelsea’s in a few months.
Is this one of those things that I should go to because it’s ridiculous and something you just kind of have to experience live at least once, or am I going to hate myself for subjecting my ears to that just to see some dudes in costume spray fake blood everywhere?

If you are thinking about it...........then go.
I did the same thing..........the music isnt the best.............but the show is very much worth it.

I've seen them about 9 or 10 times. Always a good show. Unfortunately this is the same night as Manson so I'll be going to that instead

I saw them once, 1994 my senior year of high school.
My mom didn't want me to go to a concert at Tipitinas on a school night. I was able to convince her it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.
"They're dressed like aliens, and they shoot fake blood all over the crowd. I can't miss this."
She let me go on the condition that no matter what time I got home, I had to go to school the next day.
Concert was a blast. Got a little drunk. Got a little high. Made out with some random goth chick while getting splooged on from the Cuttlefish of Cthulu. Took a faceful of Slymenstra's crotch blood.
Got home at 3am. Made it to school on time. Though I still had Gwar juice under my finger nails, and my blonde hair had a slight tinge of red in it.

If you even enjoy metal in the slightest...GO! They put on an absolutely insane live show that is incredibly funny and full of spectacle.

I saw them here in Richmond, VA in '87 (?) at the Jade Elephant.
I had no idea who GWAR was at the time, and went with a couple buddies who had seen them before. The "venue" was tiny, I was front & center at the stage, and left soaking wet from all the green & red liquid being sprayed from the mouths of the spinning shrunken heads/props. Crazy show, had a blast.

I have a funny Gwar story.
1994 I thought I was in line for a Phish concert in Dallas, TX. I’d never seen them before. I was behind this nice couple but she was wearing a studded dog collar, fish net hose, combat boots, all tatted up, nose rings. He had a similar look. The whole time they are telling me these guys were “going to blow me away, greatest concert you’ve ever seen.”
I’m like, “I’ve heard they are good.” Then explained how I’d seen the Grateful Dead about 20 times and had heard a lot about them. They looked at me kinda weird when I said that.
About 15 minutes later my friends show up and are laughing, “What the hell are you doing in line for GWAR!?” Turns out they were playing the venue next door.
30 years later we still laugh about it. Still never seen GWAR.

Ah the Jade Elephant! Loved that place. Saw many bands there… except GWAR. My college band played the Jade many times.

Seen them twice at bigger festivals...so not a dedicted GWAR show...
That being said, my observations:
1. The GWAR fans are really big fans, they are truly dedicated and get there early.
2. The put on a fun show, lots of puppets, spray, etc...
3. They did ACDC covers at the end of each show, and were great

Bring clothes that you don't care about because you WILL be covered in blood and sperm.
Saw them 35 years ago and had to toss my clothes after I tried washing them because the stains just wouldn't come out. Ruined my Hunters and Collectors t-shirt.

It could be a little sophisticated for my taste

Saw them years and years ago on a New Year's Eve at the Masquerade in Atlanta. Bottom floor club was kind of a gay-heavy dance club and was having a Fred and Ginger night. A Fred and Ginger came upstairs in tux and frilly dress just as the Gwar chick kicked a guy with a giant OJ SImpson head in the nose. Orange juice sprayed all over Fred and Ginger resulting them running for the stairs, slipping and busting their arse. I went home covered in green slime.
If the above seems like good times, check 'em out. How many original members are left, anyway? Singer died a number of years back and I think one or two of the other guys did as well.

That’s not a bad thing when your gimmick is as good as theirs. It’s a REALLY good gimmick.

I saw them once back in 2015. I prefer a good straight up metal show but glad I got to see them. If I’m ever on the road for work and they’re in whatever town I’m in and I have nothing else going on, maybe I’ll see them again.
I would definitely love to see RAWG…
