Which tires to put on Jeep Cherokee? Outside of Michelin

Wife needs some new tires as her Michelin Primacy MXM4 are starting to wear down. Obviously Michelin is considered the gold standard and I was looking at the Mich Defenders for her car, but was wondering if this time we could get away with a slightly cheaper brand. Tire prices are crazy right now. I used to run Firestones on my truck and they were fine. I'm intrigued with Yokohama and Continental, but feel like the reviews I'm reading on tire rack aren't great indicators. Just want a tire with good tread life really. There's a lot of tire brands out there

I always buy the cheapest, never had a problem.

Just put some Perrelli's on Mrs Master’s Grand Cherokee L. They roll and don’t make much noise. Not sure what else they are supposed to do.

I tried Toyos but wasn't impressed with the tread life (and yes, I did the scheduled rotation, alignment, and inflation check). I've had good luck with Bridgestone and Cooper's Mastercraft label.

I ran Yokohama on my old Jeep Grand Cherokee. A little more expensive, but 60K mile tire, IIRC. Check Wal-Mart for Cooper Tires, too. The Discoverer A/Ts I’ve got my eye on were on sale last week in the size I need- $157/tire

Cooper discover ats are a good tire. Used to be really good prices. Have gone up some in last few years though. I ran these on my tacoma from 44k miles to 365k

Keep in mind tire compounds and tread designs are a constant compromise. In general, when you gain in treadwear you lose in traction. The top tier brands (Michelin Continental Pirelli Bridgestone) at their higher prices are able to use compounds that balance that compromise better. Traction is one of the most important safety features of a car so unless you are eyeing that big insurance policy you took out on your wife you might want to consider the treadwear/traction compromise when buying tires.

Of course I'm considering other features in addition to tread life. I just don't want to end up getting a cheap tire that we only get 20k miles out of

Whatever you decide I would still compare the total price to the Michelin Defenders. If it's anywhere near close I would go with the Defenders. They are fantastic.

This is what I am looking at for my Granddaughters 23 Kia Sportage. Through Costco.

I was just going on what you stated.
If your budget prevents getting a top tier tire that is one thing but tires are the only connection to the road and dramatically impact the handling and braking performance of a vehicle. Cheap tires simply can not match quality tires in this regard. Most people won't notice the difference between the handling and braking of a quality tire until they are in an emergency situation and the people that can't tell the difference are the ones that need the extra margins of traction the most.

Yeah the Yokohama Geolander looks like a good tire. I am the type of person that checks out other people's tires and I rarely see Yokohamas around. Mind you, I'm in an area that gets snow in the winter. I think my dad has influenced me into thinking Cooper isn't a good tire lol, but I think their quality has gotten better in recent years.
