I solely listen to talk radio and have for over a decade. I used to recall genres (country, rap, rock, r&b, etc) each with their own harder or softer variations.

Is everything just a blend of hip hop now? Seriously asking the question as from a music idiot that’s all that seems to be out there mainstream wise.

Is genuine music dead to the younger generation?

Sure it does. On my Spotify. The bands just don’t exist anymore.

Metal is one of the last bastions of non-corporatized slop.

We used to have kick arse stereos that made music great.
Stereos don't do a damn thing for the hip hop shite other than give volume.
As stereos have given way to mp3 and such it seems like perception of music quality has diminished.

There is plenty of new rock out there. It’s just not supported like it used to be.

They exist but don’t get the exposure and air play as those in the past. Good, short explanation below by Rick Beato in Atlanta, an accomplished professional musician and producer.

Why I’m Disappointed in the 2025 Grammys

No way for example that Beyonce is a country music musician, he gives examples.

Yes. There isn't a single rock band in existence anymore.

Yes it exists. Spotify is great for finding new rock and not having to take a chance on a $10 CD like in the 1980s.

Geordie leans a little heavy into jazz, but he's one of the most interesting young guitarists out there.

This is a new song, with an album coming out in April. Straight rock music. Not metal or pop.

That's a good tune, but it certainly wouldn't have been my response to "does rock music exist anymore?"

That's a pop song, bordering on maybe power-pop.

I'm not disparaging it, just talking categories.

Listen to other songs of his. Some of it is straight rock beat.

Just saw him at the Parish Room of House of Blues. About 80 people showed up. They were excellent.

You'll get the usual "No, stuff as good as any before it is still out there. You just have to look really hard for it." Which, in essence, means it's dead. Jazz music is still out there. A huge portion of it is providing background sound for corporate dinners and award programs... which is a major change from the hayday of Duke and Miles. An essential characteristic of rock music was that it was big, filled big spaces, drew big crowds, commanded big pop culture movements. Now, pop culture is entirely dominated by some variant of bad hiphop and pretty much has been since the mid 90s. I'd say, at best, rock is sitting in an iron lung barely alive.

It depends on the definition of "dead"

Is there great rock music still being produced? Yes, probably more than ever and due to online streaming and video platforms it is more widely available.

But rock music may be dead from a popularity standpoint.
